I've had my 7D since Christmas. Over the past month I've noticed that 30% of the time when I press the shutter down part way, nothing happens. It is so frustrating. This is consistant using different lenses. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to send it to Canon on Monday but I wanted to check here.

Has anyone had this problem with their 7D?

TIA.

I've read about several users who have had trigger button problems with different cameras, even if I don't know if any had any problem with a 7D in particular. But in general, this is a recurring issue.

My 7d has a issue with my 70-200, but only after ~25 shoots or so, then it wont autofocus or meter for a while, then it works for a few shoots and then it doesent and so on.
Same lens works 100% on another 7D and also on my 30D.
And all my other lenses works 100% with my 7D.

It is currently in for service at a local canon repair center since the wireless flash controller decided to stop working, i did mention the issue with the lens and they said that they will have a look at it.

Are you certain that you had solid focus when it failed to fire?

No, I didn't have focus because when I tried to push the button part way to achieve focus, nothing happened.

I brought it to the local Canon service centre yesterday. The girl at the main desk cleared my settings and declared the camera fixed. I haven't had a chance to play with it, hopefully tomorrow but I'm not really confident that it was fixed. Honestly, the girl didn't seem to know what she was doing. She couldn't find the centre focus point and asked me to help her out. She told me that I shouldn't use the P mode because then the camera would choose the focus points for me. What???? not true at all, I control the focus points and use the expansion points. Then she told me that should use the Tv mode because you can control the depth of field  Well, you can do that in P mode as well but if D of F is your worry, why would you be in Tv mode? Oy.

I honestly left frazzled, confused and not very confident.

Well, if your camera won't lock focus, it won't fire...

You might consider divorcing AF from your shutter button and using the back button only...

Now there's a good idea. Although I'd still like my shutter button to work. I haven't used the back button on my 7D but I used to use it all the time on my 30D :)

ETA: Jay, sometimes the camera did fire and it wasn't locked in. I have had a few totally blurry shots. Hopefully, it will stop raining and I can play this afternoon.

You still need the shutter button to take the picture (unless you use a grip or a remote) so if your shutter button is now troublesome like so many other 50D, 40D, 30D, etc. bodies then it will likely need repair. Still under warranty, isn't it? Send it in...

I am having trouble with my 5D2 not focusing regardless of the button, shutter or back, on occasion. It is more frequent with my 24-70 but has happened with the 70-200 as well.

Don't forget that if you are using AI Servo you can set the AF priority to "Focus vs Shoot" which would prevent the shutter release if focus lock has not been obtained (Cfn III-2) and you can set the lens drive to focus search (Cfn III-4). Either of these modes might create the symptoms you describe.

The 7D has the ability to be customized. Sometimes these user settings, when misunderstood, can make it felt like the 7D was a complete let down.

I almost threw away a good cable release, thinking that it was faulty. Only to find that it won't fire unless it has focus locked and I was testing it with camera facing the floor.
