I just got landed a large gig to go around and shoot all the features of neighborhoods for real estate company in town. Needless to say, this is going to be a lot of photos over the next couple months. I was thinking about using dropbox.com to deliver the images. It will take up too much time to burn all these images to discs and deliver them.

If you don't use dropbox, what online file hosting/sharing setup would you recommend?

I want to be able to upload the folder of images, send a link to my clients, and they download the folder of images.

I use it, but I've never considered using it for delivering digital images.

With a capped quota on Dropbox though, dumping them in a password-protected web space is a lot more efficient.

EDIT: You say a lot of photos, but are they web res or print res? If they are web res you should be fine with the quota. If it makes your life easier, then I say go for it.

When I state 'a lot of photos' I mean over the course of time. It won't be all at once, and they are for online use, not print. This real estate company is going to start marketing their listings a little differently and they want to provide images from around the neighborhood and surrounding features that would appeal to buyers. These images will be used online from what I understand.

Do you have your own web space?

I think the best way it would be if you have your own web space, and if you can make a simple page with table, where you can upload the images and sent them a link.

I have a page being constructed but it's not done. I am not the one doing the construction, so I would imagine it would cost me having to have the designer add and remove images all the time. I would also like to use this tool to send images from the homes I shoot to the clients that do higher end print materials. In the long run I would need to be able to provide images to multiple clients. Adding pages to my website is going to run up costs too much. I would like to keep it simple, I upload images, I send a link to my clients, they download the images...simple. I don't think adding them to my site will be as simple as a file sharing program. I just don't know which one to go with.

Do you have access to the webspace? No need for pages or anything. Just create a directory, password protect it, and you can upload files whenever, and then the client can just go in via FTP (give them read-only access to just that directory) and grab the files.

If I was doing your website, I would just set this up for free as it would take me about two minutes.

You know, it probably has that because I used FTP to send some images to my designer. I'll ask him about that, now that I better understand what you are suggesting. Thanks!

Even if you don't have your own webspace, you can set up your own home FTP server.

Lifehacker.com has a fantastic tutorial on how to set everything up. I had one running on an older PC until it died, and it was awesome. Wound up using the system for a home ftp and home web server.

When I set it up, I had a separate log-in for each client, and a master log-in for myself. It's nice to be able to FTP things to yourself when you're out and about. I've used it a few times while on vacation or traveling. It's also nice to be able to gain FTP access to your music, documents, and other important electronic stuff.

I have used dropbox to share digital images and it seemed to work well. There are two ways to do it through dropbox, a shared folder or a photo gallery. The shared folder is a little more cumbersome because the person who wants to upload the files must also sign up for dropbox. But once they sign up, they will have a folder on their computer with all of the files in it. If you use the photo gallery, the client can view the images and save them individually. Click here for an example of a dropbox photo gallery. (external link) If you would like to see how the shared folder works, pm me with your email address and I will share a folder with you. If you are concerned with the quota, there are options to upgrade to "pro" accounts with additional storage, up to 100GB.

Thanks Ed! I ended up going with Dropbox.com and it is working great! I have been inviting my clients to join and every time one joins I get an extra 250 MB of space. So far the response is all positive. Once they figure it out I tell them the benefits from their end. A lot of my clients work from multiple places, office, home, laptop, so I tell them how they can keep all their files in dropbox folders and view them from all their computers. No more going back to the office to look things up. My clients love when I make their lives easier.
