same kind that I rode in Boston in the 70s. I remember hearing a rumour that the Boston cars came from Dallas after some huge flood that buried them in mud. MBTA bought them, cleaned em up, and put them in service on Boston streets.

I was a starving student then ...

Great stuff Gene! Were these handheld? When I went to a local transportation museum they would not allow me to bring in a tripod which is why I ask. (snuck in a pocket one anyway, but I digress).

Jon, looks like the jig's up. These were shot hand held and are all single shots tonemapped using Oloneo + CS5 and other plugins. The locomotive and southern hotel I have in seperate posts were both 3 image hdr's handheld. For those I created the hdr file using CS5, tonemapped in Photmatix then finished back in CS5.

Well, not to knock either the hotel or locomotive shots (which are wonderful), but these are every bit as well done. It's amazing you're able to achieve such a similar high quality result with not only one shot, but a somewhat different process as well.

Care to elaborate any deeper on your processing of one shot ? Are you bringing in 3 adjusted exposures of the same shot? Also, how much time do you spend on processing an average one shot vs. 3 shot (or more) photo? Just wondering because it seems I'm spending every free moment I have processing shots. I need to figure out how to become more efficient.

Well, so as not to give away too many secrets, ;) I'll put something together and pm you. Of course, I'd appreciate any insights on your processing using the beta 4 version of photomatix you'd care to share in return.

You'll also find that you will spend much more time processing than shooting most of the time. :(

By the way, Gene, in another thread recently, someone posted their original shot after saying they had to do quite a bit of raising and lowering of levels to bring it out. Just for grins, I pulled the posted original as a jpg and ran it through Oloneo. In my opinion, I ended up with as good or better an image than he had after only 5 seconds. I slid ONE slider to get to that point. :) I'd love to post it, but it isn't mine.

Thanks again for the kind words. I have to admit I enjoy the processing of my images as much as I do taking the photographs in the first place...most of the time. There are times that nothing I do seems to be working and everything looks like #@%*. :D

The hardest part for me sometimes is knowing when to quit with the processing.

Boy do I know that feeling! Sometimes, I just can't make it work.

I remember riding these in L.A. when I was young. I have a couple more images I may add here too.

Doc,

I like the others, but this one hits the nail on the head.

Windpig, thanks. I'm using that one as my desktop wallpaper at the moment. Next time, maybe I'll shoot forward looking out the front windshield. I don't recall what that view would look like since this is indoors.

Here's one more shot. It's a lower angle shot of another I've already posted here.

Beautiful Gene! This must be one of those duck to water shots we spoke of :)

The roof is a bit washed out on the left. Did you consider darkening it? It doesn't really bother me, but it does give away the fact that it's one shot.

Sure, make me work harder!! Now I had to make a dup of this image, adjust it to bring out the detail in the blown out areas, stack and align the two, blend in the darkened upper left to the lower image and save...whew. :D

(The blown out highlights didn't bother me either but it was interesting to see how much detail I was able to rescue).
