Does it trigger via hotshoe? I can't find any information on that.

I assume the 270ex will trigger via hotshoe although i'm not sure about controlling power levels

The 270EX can be used in an "Off Camera" operation in one of two ways that I know of. You can use an ETTL "Off Shoe" cord and they can be found in many different lengths. If you use the "Off Shoe" cord and you are using a newer DSLR or G series camera, with the flash menu, then you can use the 270EX in either ETTL or manual modes. When used with an older camera, without the flash menu, you will only have control in ETTL.

If you wish to use the flash "Off Camera" without an ETTL cord then you will need a Radio Popper Cube in which case you would be able to control the flash output manually and trigger it from either a Radio Popper PX or JRx transmitter.

You might also be able to use the Pocket Wizard Flex and Mini but I am not knowledgable enough about them to answer that.

Thanks! Just the answer I am looking for.

I forgot to mention that when using the RP Cube you will also need an RP JRx "Studio" receiver connected to the cube.

One of the ways that I use the 270EX in "Off Camera" flash is in conjunction with 430EX's. I have a small travel setup with a T1i and G10 along with a couple of lenses, a 270EX and 1-2 430EX's. I have optical slaves for the 430EX's and fire them remotely with the 270EX attached to either the T1i or G10. You can control the 270EX in manual mode, which is required to trigger optical slaves, from either of these cameras through their flash menus. You can set the manual flash output of the 270EX to act as fill or just as a trigger flash for the 430EX's.
