Ear plugs??

I was waiting for someone to ask about that! ;)

Some of the DJ's I've worked with get pretty loud. That and I frequently find myself up around their speakers while shooting (or sometimes, it's up near his speakers that the venue seats me). The volume is tolerable, I suppose, but a couple of ear plugs sure make the evening pass more comfortably.

Ear plugs are an ESSENTIAL part of any photographers kit. I use Hearos foam earplugs, with about a 30db volume reduction, from the Earplug Superstore (external link). Even with those it was way too loud for me at the wedding tonight.

I damaged my hearing years ago in clubs, just being around too much loud noise for too long. I can hear perfectly, but I hear a high pitched noise all the time, which can drive you mad. It also makes your ears more sensitive, I can't even go to the movies without at least musicians ear plugs now. Tinnitus apparently drives some people to suicide. I can't quite understand that, but I can understand the incredible frustration, especially knowing you bought it on yourself. You never hear silence again.

Once ears are damaged there's NOTHING you can do about it. Once they're stuff, they're stuffed for life. If you start hearing high pitched noises after being around loud noise, and it stays around for more than an hour, the damage has started. At that point you need to be wearing foam earplugs anywhere loud to protect your ears.

Protect your ears everyone. I may start a thread on it some time, I think it's really, really important. Trust me. I miss the silence.

Yup, I will echo Tim's sentiments. As you can see by my profile pic, I'm also a guitarist and even way back in the days when it was viewed as decidely uncool, I believed in protecting my hearing when playing with a band. If for no other reason than my hearing seems to be a little more highly sensitive than most and loud noises to through my head like a nail.
