The average is impossible to tell. Word press is free, and way to many people use it, so it would drive down the average. The median is a bit easier. I would guess it to be about $1500-3000 if you have it done by a webmaster.

Webmaster usually charge extra for whatever hours they have to customize to your like. The most important thing is the website must have a good business sense of style My adventure is on Flickr

But that hosting is also for my personal/family stuff, and another organization's website that I maintain (so they pay me some of the cost)

You could only visit if my computer was on and internet was up, but I was at University, so that was not an issue. So if it costs $1500 for a great website/domain/etc. Couldn't you just buy an inexpensive computer solely dedicated to keeping a website up at all times using your already existing broadband internet service? Honest question, I'm thinking of doing it myself, maybe there are downsides I don't see right now. It's feasible. Assuming you have something speedy like FIOS, and you're site isn't going to get a ton of bandwidth. There are also services that will dynamically map your domain name to your IP address if you have a non-static IP generated by your ISP.
