From free to $50,000. Its all in how much you want to put into it. The average is impossible to tell. Word press is free, and way to many people use it, so it would drive down the average. The median is a bit easier. I would guess it to be about $1500-3000 if you have it done by a webmaster.

Personally I use Go Daddy to host. I think it was $125 for 5 years. Domain and hosting. For the site itself, I have the blog part running on Wordpress (free) with the SLR theme (also free). The main site I have Sean McCormacs LRB Portfolio plug in for Lightroom (about $20).

Some people just use wordpress.

They buy a domain, buy some server space (preferrably that uses cpanel) and then set up wordpress.

Whilst it's nice to have a site a blog can be exceptionally content rich and google loves that.
If you notice on my main site that links to my blog, whivh links back to any of my 3 sites.

With my site there isn't much room for text however the blog makes up for that as it's also running on my domain.

Average is about $800-$1,500 for a basic nice gallery with content pages. Webmaster usually charge extra for whatever hours they have to customize to your like. The most important thing is the website must have a good business sense of style

I paid $150 for my flash template, and $10/month for my hosting. But that hosting is also for my personal/family stuff, and another organization's website that I maintain (so they pay me some of the cost)

Wordpress and Gallery are free :)

My setup costs were $0 US. I'm not sure what that'd be in Canadian Dollars. :D

Hosting is another matter entirely. Between the hosting itself and various domain registrations I have about $150 a year in it.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

get a domain...$10.99
then hit me up about free hosting site via PM
then get the free hosting and hire someone locally that can do it, so that you can sit down wit them and direct them on your needs or go for one of those template sites that everyone gets these days, and try to customize it. But really when I look at those template sites....I just say this....great photographer.ZERO creativity on their site aside from their pictures...another template (blahhhhh)

potential clients notice that too. They do google searches in the area, and when they see the same photosite template just customized across all of them, they probably think the same thing....who knows. I know I would.

$10/yr for the domain name.
$60/yr for the hosting (hostgator.com with "unlimited" bandwidth, supposedly)

The real expense comes with the webmaster. If you use hostgator, or another host with Cpanel, you can manage some of it yourself, but I do recommend a professional to protect your content and design it properly.

Once upon a time I had my own website that I just hosted from my computer. You could only visit if my computer was on and internet was up, but I was at University, so that was not an issue.

So if it costs $1500 for a great website/domain/etc. Couldn't you just buy an inexpensive computer solely dedicated to keeping a website up at all times using your already existing broadband internet service?

Honest question, I'm thinking of doing it myself, maybe there are downsides I don't see right now.

It's feasible. Assuming you have something speedy like FIOS, and you're site isn't going to get a ton of bandwidth. There are also services that will dynamically map your domain name to your IP address if you have a non-static IP generated by your ISP.

I run an Apache server for testing/development on an old XP box, but I'm sure you could build a fairly powerful Linux box for well under $1500. I wouldn't want to run any production websites off of it though.
