Anyone have any experience with this lens? I was looking for something with a little more reach than my 28-135 without breaking the bank. I found this review and it looks promising, even though it's a 20+ year old lens. The one I am looking at if going for $95 shipped.

I know one of our members, FrostBytePhoto, has one that he really likes...but I don't have any first hand knowledge of it.

Optically is one still a strong performer compaired to the more modern 70-200mm F4L non IS.

AF motor is a little slow, but not bad at all. They normally go for around $200 used and for the money, are really worth it.

why not sell your 28-135mm, and pick up a 55-250IS instead...

i thought i remember reading that the f3.5-f4.5 version is better than the constant f4...

I had one of these for a while and was quite happy with it. It was finally put aside when I was able to afford a 70-200 F2.8. Assuming the example you are thinking of buying is in good shape it will be $95 well spent.

Wasn't impressed with mine - soft at all apertures/focal lengths. It may have been a bad copy.

I borrowed one from my uncle a few years ago and used it for a couple weeks.
Ok at most focal lengths, a bit soft on the longer end. AF was slow, but ok outside. I wouldn't use it for fast sports though, but probably ok some applications.

The way the zoom works, you will have to deal with lens creep as you're walking around.

Here are a couple samples i liked from it. I think Exif should still intact, a couple more ore here: http://www.flickr.com …371433120/with/443249184/ (external link)

I still have one that carried over from my film days that i play around with. The lens is/was a good performing lens Optics wise, zoom speed* and subtle focus change is moderatly fast. Bad part is slow on inital focus, noisy its, not smooth feeling. Remember this is Canons first ventures into the telephoto lens.
I'll be honest here the lens isnt light compared to modern ones, but it is rugged and holds its own for performace of the glass. zooming out is a breeze with the sliding Body type but she aint so great in the weight or speedy AF. Macro is pretty good but isnt something i would do with it regularly, thats what i have the Sigma 105.

hope this helps.
Sam
