I'm in the market for a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L.

I've heard rumors for at least a year that this lens is old and due for an update, possibly even with IS.

I don't care much about IS in the 24-70 range (I have a 135mm without IS and haven't found it lacking).. I'm just wondering how much better the optics will be.

What's the latest? I'd rather not pay $1,350 for a lens and find out it'll be supplanted by something new in a few months..

This has been beat to death. I doubt it will be released soon as they already released their new lens lineup this year. It'd be nice to have but the 24-70L isn't a slouch to begin with. Get it and get shooting. You can find some good deals on used ones too on here. Good luck!

No, this lens would not be released this year, since canon has released their bodies and lens for this year. Maybe next year, with 1Ds mark IV.

Early, mid, or late next year .. if you were a betting man? It's nearly October, so "this" year doesn't mean much.

Fair enough - I'm tired of waiting. I went ahead and ordered it.

Congrats, I'm sure you'll like it but on the off chance you won't lose much money reselling it.

Saw that you said you already ordered but I thought I would throw this out there.

For $900 you could have gotten Sigma's 24-70 f/2.8 HSM. In my opinion and experiences it is just as good if not better than the L. Many other's have had the same experience as well.

This is one of the most anticipated lens upgrades, and for good reason. It would be the ultimate all around lens, and improved optics with the latest IS generation would make an already good lens better. Personally I gave up waiting and decided to go for the 16-35. I will have to keep the 24-105 to cover for now and just make up for the f4 aperture by increasing ISO.

Great lens as it is, no need to wait. The new version will probably cost $2000 anyways which means the old version won't lose much value if any.

I wonder how many people who say this lens is in need of an upgrade have actually tried the The 24-70. I guess it could be made better ( maybe sharper wide open, IS etc. ) but Its a great lens that is more then capable.

Good luck with the purchase, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

A 24-105 f/2.8 IS would be the ultimate, but I digress. :)

Thanks. Per UPS it's "out for delivery" so I should have it later this afternoon.

The ultimate all around lens would be a 10-1000mm f/1.0 which weighs 100g and is 100mm at full zoom extension and costs $100 but I don't think we'll see it anytime soon

I'm going to wait for the MKII version.

I've already been waiting for a year. I could see continuing to wait for a refresh 400 f/2.8 or something along those lines, but not for such a modestly priced lens.

I just mounted up the lens and started playing. Nothing special, but I can tell I'll have fun with the lens.

This was at 50mm f/2.8 - 1/100 - ISO 100
