to S95 or.....?

If I was to buy a new P&S what would you recommend.

What I'm looking for in P&S
1) larger sensor
2) RAW support
3) about the price of S95
4) low light mode
5) HDR

Sounds like you need an S95.

I'll pay $2.79 extra at Amazon and buy the Panasonic LX5.

S95 (399) to LX5 (464 for white one, 497 for black one) how is that 2.79 extra?

Also, personally, I would compare the G11/12 to the LX3/5. Not to an s95.

Everyone has their own definition of small...but as an x-Leica owner (M3; M4P) this is interesting to me. Look forward to seeing images, and handling a real live one.

FWIW my alternative camera now is my G11, or my Pany ZS3. Regret not gettiing anLX3 instead of the G11. (My first one was replaced.)

I read at least one place that the X100 will cost $1,500, so maybe not in the same league as the S95.. Although I think the pricing came from a rumor, so take it with an appropriate amount of salt..

yeah, not spending 1,500 on a compact.

IF you want the smallest size possibly, the S95 is the obvious choice. I'm fairly happy with the S90.

Not sure what "low light mode" is. If the light is low, I go into Av, f/2 (I have to stay at the wide end), and crank the ISO (just like I do on my DSLRs)

it lowers MP to 2.5 in S95, raises ISO, eliminates most noise.

S95 is a great little camera, when I don't feel like to carry the SLR.

I never use scene modes, only M and Av. I can do the same thing as "candle mode" by downsizing in LR as that also eliminates most noise. I can "raise" the ISO beyond 3200 by underexposing and bringing back in post.

Imagine if Kubrick had "Candle mode" when he was shooting Barry Lyndon

How is the HD video on the S95? I'm generally happy with the SD video on the S90, but it would be nice to join the 21st century and go HD.

I agree that you can do it in LR, and I do. I like having this extra mode, leaves more time for other things then going through pics and adjusting every single one on PC. its good having options.
And its not excactly a new "scene" mode.

Have not tried to shoot normal HD video yet, had no reason. But so far I did play with the miniature HD video at 10x speed. Basically its a simple way of create time lapse video.

Again, i could do that on PC, blur top slightly, speed up playback, then render/encode the video, but why?

I have the LX5 and the S95 ( wife has S95 ). I got the LX5 mainly for the 24mm 2.0 end. Its a great point and shoot but its not as pocketable as the S95. The LX5 has a faster lens but it appears to me the S95 does a little better with JPG compression as I see less noise with the Canon ( I still have not tried RAW, but both shoot RAW )

If you want something smaller the S95 is the way to go.

Right now you can order it off of Amazon for $349 shipped. It's backordered, but I suppose Amazon will still honor it when it comes back in stock.

I paid $362 shipped through Newegg 3 weeks ago. This is the best price you can get on this. Time to jump on the deal!
