Is it just me or is the going price of a used (not mint) 5DII at 2100+ seem totally absurd?

I mean new at BH they are 2500.

With a 24-105 it is around 3300 and that lens new fetches 900$ on any market so with a little hassle your at 2400$

1 year Canon warranty not worth 300-400$?

Just curious what the deal is. I mean my average Canon repair costs are about 100-200$ depending on the problems and I have sent in gear about 4 times. I am not complaining, gear needs service.

anyone think I am out of line?

You are indeed confused. The 24-105mm f/4L (external link)fetches $1,093 at B&H.

he meant selling it new on open market, not buying it new from retailers.

well that's still at least 12% savings, that's not little.

the chance of needing warranty services is in general very low.

plus technically speaking, if the receipt is provided there might be warranty left.

i bought my 5DMKII here used for $1875, and i'm cheap (kinda). lol

See but that is worth it to me, that is about the rate id expect.

2100+ is too much if there is nicks and scratches, middle mileage and no warranty left in my opinion.

And yes, I was speaking of getting 900 on the *used* open market, not retail.

You said, new 24-105L is $3,300, and used, they are going for $900. By your initial calculation, you said you would be saving $2400 buying it used, so essentially, you are implying that you could say "screw warranty" for that much savings.

I was pointing out that your logic was flawed, because your initial assumption was false. At B&H, the 24-105 L sells for $1,093, so that is a savings of $193 for not having a warranty. Lots of people buy used to get the savings of $193 or even less.

$300-400 is significant savings. You could buy a nice prime lens with that. 85 f/1.8 used, to go with that newly owned camera.

no, what he meant is kit $3300 @ b&h - selling the 24-105 $900 = your expense is $2400 for body.

I've seen some crazy prices for used camera equipment in general. I don't get it, but I won't buy used so I guess I can't complain :). Ex. I've seen many 70-200 2.8 II selling for $2,199 used, but they only cost $2,299. So to save a hundred dollars you are taking the chance that the lens was never dropped abused ect...

You have paypal and shipping fees, just keep that in mind. This means you will net maybe $850. The problem is that the 24-105 is probably one of the leading lenses sold, and you can find them for under $900 on any one given board just about daily.

For us Canadians it is often worth buying used from the US.

To use your example, the 5DmkII kit is around $3450, add (13%) tax and you are looking at another $400, so getting close to $4000! Buying it from B&H or one of the cheaper US stores is all fine and good, but we still have to pay 13% HST tax on top of that, so you are saving minimally and if you have warranty problems no local store to deal with. So buying used from the US we save on the product itself, as well as HST, so it's much cheaper in the end.

Certainly a good point, but my rant is not really about that lens or any lens in general.

It is specifically used 5DII's.

I have bought 5 used DSLR's over the years (20D/30D/40D/5D/1DIII) and save tremendously doing so.

In contrast paying 2150 for a used, non-warranted, non mint 5DII is joke to me.

Obviously not to others, otherwise the used prices would go down. Supply and demand works quite well in many cases! :)

I think Team has a good point. Demand for the 5D2 is still huge. In addition to all of the normal photographers out there, there is a large and ever growing group of film users out there as well. The 5D2 has become the go to camera for any small or medium budget production. As much as I'm sure we all hate to hear this, the larger productions are using them as "disposable" cameras. A good friend just finished shooting a large budget action film, and they had at least 10 5D2s on hand at a given time. Any time they wanted to take a risk to get a great shot, they used the 5D2. If it worked, great, if not, just toss the 5D2 and get another. At $2,500 each, they are considered disposable compared to the Reds they use for most filming.

the truff.

When I sell my gear on here or FM, I try to get as much as I can for it. Why? Because I know it's in excellent condition. Plus, being a college student, I need to recoup as much as possible. So if someone spent $2500 on a new 5D MKII, used it for a few months, heck even a year, you would want them to sell it used for sub $2000? I mean who wouldn't..but if the current going rate is $2100 ish..that's what they're going to sell it for. That is, unless they really need the cash so they're looking for a quick sale, they make too much money and they don't care, or they're just uneducated with regards to used prices.

I buy all my lenses new. This way I know nothing has happened to it and that if I were to sell it sometime down the road, I'd make a good chunk of it back. Camera bodies...I buy used but like others on here, I wait it out so that I can find a good deal or haggle with the seller. If you don't have patience...you're going to pay the going rate.

As long as people keep buying them at the going rate...that's where it's going to stay.
