I was chatting to a sales guy recently and he mentioned that the 60D seems to be a disappointment compared to it's predecessors. I mentioned to him that my last camera was a 30D and he said I'd not be happy with the 60D coming from that.

Opinions folks? Anyone with much experience yet?

I agree with the salesman, you would be better off upgrading to a 7D or 5DmkII. To me if you are already going to spend over 1k on a camera body then I would save up more and get the 7D. The 60D kit comes with a new lens, 18MP and 1080p HD video, a new swivel LCD screen and that's basically it for the wow factor. It's something that we've already seen on the 7D and 5DmkII. Don't sell yourself short, you'll be happier with a 7D or 5DmkII.

Gear List: 5DmkII, 24-70L f/2.8, 85L f/1.2, 70-200L IS II, 100 prime Macro f/2.8. (2) 580EXII

This is not correct, the 60D is a big step up from the 30D. It has many other features you don't mention, it is better than the 30D in every aspect, other than the weaker vs stronger AA filter and chassis material: menu, speed, ISO, features, AF, battery life, LCD screen, metering, fps, etc.

One of the things the salesman didn't like was the lighter "more plastic" feel to the camera.

That is one of those personal preference things, each person will react subjectively to it. Pop a heavy lens on the camera, and you will appreciate the weight a bit more after a long day.

Take a look at this chart that I put together describing the differences between the 50D and 7D: https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=10883817&postcount=13

Nice chart. I appreciate the work you've put into that.

He probably wants you to buy the 7D, feels it would be a better fit for you coming from the 30D and more $$$ for him.

Yes, that is true. It comes with a higher ISO up to 12,800, Digic IV, but in comparison to the 50D, 7D and 5DmkII do you honestly believe that you would sell him the 60D. . .when the 7D and 60D has striking similarities. I'm just saying with an improved 19 pt AF system which was used on the previous 1D series, slightly bigger chassis, same ISO features. . .you would have him settle for the 60D? The 60D is certainly not a disappointment if that is your first purchase for a Canon DSLR, but if you are upgrading your 30D then yes it is.

Why buy a 60D or 7D and not buy a 50D with a good lens?

The 50D is a good camera with a fine grip ( and now with a fair pricing since the 7D came out ) and combined with a better lens it's picture quality is not far behind a 7D.
If you're not into video the 50D is a very good choice, and the money you saved instead of buying a 7D you can invest in decent lenses.

If you think this upgrade will not give you the results you want in picturequality better skip the 7D and go for the 5DII. i found the 30D - 40D - 50D a good visable step upwards but to be honest nothing compared to the 5DII upgrade.

5DII - 24-105L
50D - 70-200L f/4 IS

5DII ~ 7D ~ T90Film 17-40L ~ 24-105L ~ 70-200L F4 IS ~ Sigma 18-250 OS HSM Macro ~ 50mm f/1.4 + f/1.8 ~ 85mm f/1.8 ~ 100mm f/2.8 Macro ~ Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro

The 60D a camera in a 30D-sized body (with less weight) and the same FPS but with better AF (of the 40D/50D) and with 7D image quality. It also has a LOAD of other obvious features not worth mentioning (we know what they are) the 30D is a very good camera but basic even in comparison to a 40D.

Unless you want/need very specific things from a 7D then it's a total upgrade IMO. If I was sticking with crop I would be interested.

Technically as others have said, the 60D is better. Personally, I don't like plastic bodies and I think that is the main thing that would put me off the 60D.

I don’t have any experience yet other than what I have read, which is probably the same amount he has. He didn’t have a 60D to sell you; I’m guessing he had a 7D.

I called canon and they should start shipping between today now and the 30th. So we should be finding out soon. I hope it turns out well, because while the 7D is probably a better camera I don’t think I would benefit by spending the extra $600. But I could be wrong.

It is lighter and it is polycarbonate on aluminum. My 20D felt cheesy compared to my A1; but I don’t want to go back.

Hehehe. For all the cynics out there, he had both the 60D and 7D (amongst others) in stock. And I made it very clear from the start that I was just asking questions, so he knew there was no sale involved.

His view was to get either the 50D or the 7D.
