Try using some compressed air under the shutter button, or borrowing a remote cable from a friend (or take it to a shop and borrow theirs).

Or even try the timer mode.. You will know if it is the shutter or the shutter release button.

One last thing: put lens in MF and camera on M and try an exposure. See if it releases shutter.

Pretty sure that you need to press down on the shutter to make the timer go. The shutter would fire (or make a horrible noise) even if it was broken, what this sounds like is nothing be triggered at all.

I think she stated previously that it was focusing fine.

I don't want to ask a silly question, but here goes: are you using a grip?

My bad.. you sure need the shutter button for timer mode :)

I thought she mentioned only putting the lens on MF, not the camera on M. May be I missed it :( Just was ruling out the possibility of hitting the aperture or shutter speed limits.

If it doesn't work in green-box mode, it may have to be sent in.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I called tech support, and apparently, I need to send it to get serviced. It wasn't a problem with focusing, because it was focusing when I pushed the button half way. So the guy at tech support said it might be an error in the camera itself, and it needs to be examined.

Luckily its still under warranty :)

Not a silly question.. I had a similar problem with my 20D and Phottix grip until I cleaned all electrical contacts..

No.. I'm not using a grip.
I tired the timer mode, and it didn't fire as well.
I also checked if I had mirror lockup enabled..

Tattodan, how do I do that? and shouldn't it say "not enough space"?

It's not too unusual to read about people who have contact problems in the trigger button.
Trying a remote release is a good idea then, but it takes you have one...
