... The canon is an EF-S lens. I've removed the dumper on mine so I can actually mount it on a EF body...

Sorry to ask another silly question but this is the bit I've been missing - whats the "dumper"? I've looked at the EF-S and EF mounts on my lenses and they look...well, the same to all intents and purposes. I have a funny feeling I'm missing something so blindingly obvious, its going to hurt when it hits me.....

EDIT: I dont think it'll hurt that much - is it the rubber ring?

yes it's the rubber bumper. On the 10-22 it comes off VERY easy:

you sir are a star! For the small number of UWA pics I intend to take I'm sure the outlay for a 1.4TC might be a worthwhile option rather than a 17-40. Cheers.

yeah, it's either:
  • sell 5D, get 24-105, go 100% APS-C
  • keep 5D, swap 10-22 for 10-20, also get 28-75
  • keep 5D, swap 10-22 for 17-40

I'm leaning towards the middle option for now. I really like having both bodies, but having 14mm effective on the 5D would be amazing. So I think I might go that route. Especially if I can snag a used 28-75 as well covering all my bases. The 17-40 option is also appealing since it's a smaller kit all around (I've enjoyed only having 3 lenses lately, but I think the 10-20 might be a bit limiting?) with the most range with only 3 lenses...

Hi Ben. Just wondering what you ended up with. I'm in the same situation and it been bugging me all this time. Looks from your 'Gear List' that you upgraded to a 5Dii (sorry that it drowned :(). What made you stick with the 10-22? Thanks.

yeah, maybe I should update my list today?

I just picked up a 5Dii this week and have a 17-40 for it. I LOVED the 10-22 and 7D, but the 10-22 isn't sealed and that became a problem for me, I got dust inside mine and it had to be sent in. So now I'm migrating back to FF for sealed lenses. It also doesn't help that I love the feel of my 24L on FF, so I was using it on the 5D and the 10-22 on the 7D, combining everything to a single body system just makes things easier for me.

Thanks for responding! I just picked up a 5Dii as well and I'm trying to pick up a 16-35ii. Any experience in this setup? Thanks! Your photos are awesome.

the 16-35ii is a great lens. IQ it's a tad better than the 17-40L (which beat the old version IMHO) so you have to choose between price, speed (2.8) and FLs (16mm -vs- 17mm and 36~40mm). The 17-40 is also lighter if you care and takes the more standard 77mm filter. But if you're a panel filter guy a 82mm ring isn't that bad to deal with.

I had the 16-35mm a while ago and returned it for the 17-40. At the time I was hung up on price and the filter issue (before I switched EVERYTHING to panels). Now I'm planning on switching back to the 16-35mm when I can afford the upgrade...

Ben - Loved your work! Are most of you work on the crop sensor and do you see a huge different when moving to full frame.

TIA

thanks!

well, I'm all over the map with FF -vs- crop. I have images I love from both. My 2010 images were mostly on the 7D w/10-22, but when I did a side by side comparison the only difference for landscaping was really the sharpenss? The 7D has a stronger filter on it for sure. But that combo was great. I just love my 24mm on FF for my personal shooting, and I need video, so I made the switch from a 7D & 5D to a 5Dii so I could consolidate bodies.

Your work motivated me back into photography again and I've found my way to newschoolofphotography.com today. I work mostly in video and editing but the DSLR trend got me back to getting a DSLR and it has been fun not having to lug around a full size video cam.

Ben thanks for sharing.... Sometimes I was thinking about a wide angle lens that could fit a FF and a crop (in my case 1.0x and 1.3x) and I must say you put things to the test.

Btw, were you the one who got a 5D drowned in a strong wave and tried out Nikon?
