That's a great lens (I'm talking about the affordable f/1.8 Canon) if you have enough working distance and you like the perspective you get from shooting at those distances.

I wouldn't dare go out on a paid shoot with only that lens in my bag. It might be the only lens I end up using though. If you shoot primes, it's good to have a wide range of focal lengths to chose from. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and Canon 85mm f/1.8 is a nice combo that covers a lot of ground.

The xti is a very capable camera but If u rent a 24-70 u should take an extra day learning how to shoot with it...#1 its not called the brick for giggles...its a monster of a lens attached to your xti and will be very very front heavy. Your gonna need to keep your shutter speed up to get some great shots...the 17-55 is also an awesome lens with IS for general walk around shooting...the IS will probably help with your keeper rate too!
