I have a 580EX flash (not the II) with a 40D. I have been told that I cannot reuse it if I went with a 50D (or presumably 5D II) because the II version of the flash added some controls for the 50D? I can't seem to find any references for that in google, is there something to it?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

That doesn't make any sense. Check the manual.

The appendix mentions different camera types.

You can use it but you lose the in-camera flash control ability. You can however set the non-functioning (camera menu) items directly in the flash menu - if that makes sense?

In the newer cameras, you can access and control the 580EX II's custom function settings via the camera itself. With the 580EX, the custom functions have to be changed on the flash itself. The 580EX will definitely work, though.

Ah. So do I actually lose anything I have with my 40D or do I just miss on new items in the newer cameras?

You don't lose anything at all. You just lose the convenience of being able to access the flash's custom functions through the camera. You still have to change the custom functions on the flash itself (meaning you have to memorize what each custom function # actually does, or carry a manual).
