They are Eastern Phoebes ("they" may be just "it").

Edit: which is, or course, a flycatcher.

A couple new pics. Taken with an old 1D mkII and TCs. The last one was with 2x and 1.4x TCs stacked.
The hummingbird photos are about 50% crop. Processed. Light wasn't good for the hummers, ISO 1600 used.

Since I've shot a few recent photos with my old (but new to me) 1D Mk II, I thought I'd share a 100% crop just to demonstrate why we can't always rely on 100% crops to tell how sharp a lens is or isn't.

THIS IS WITH 2X SIGMA TC, AT 600MM

APS-H sensor (bigger sensor), only 8mp, large pixels. These all help a lens produce a nice 100% crop by not putting too much resolving pressure on the optics. If I had taken this with my 7D, the results would be different (softer image).

Thanks, Gabe, for posting your workflow in detail.

I looked at your workflow more closely, and I believe that noise reduction is key in your workflow. For me, since I only have an older version of PS (CS2) which does not allow me to manipulate raw files directly, I have to convert them (I do shoot raw) from DPP, and the noise reduction function in PS never seems to do anything for me :( As a result, I cannot sharpen the images as much as I want because the noise level would be too high.

Here is my usual post processing work flow.
But let me start with what to keep in mind during the actual photo taking process.

I guess you mean that the 100% crop would look less good, but the full image should look better/the same, no?

The full image would look almost the same, as long as I framed it the same way. Obviously, the 7D with its 1.6x multiplication factor "zooms" in more so to speak if we take the shot from the same place.

But if I ensure that the squirrel fills the frame exactly the same way as in the 1D Mk II shot (i.e. we take the 7D shot from a greater distance), the full image would look very similar, while the 100% crop would be a little softer (since we magnify the 7D image a lot more when viewing at 100%).

Yes, I agree. By using CS5 my image quality went up considerably, due to the new ACR and the reduce noise tool.
