I don't know about that . That 6.5 pounds may be a turn off to some :(

I agree for sure but folks that have been contemplating getting a nice used copy of the Canon 300/f2.8 IS that goes for around $3750 used might just opt for this Sigma since they both weigh essentially the same and its priced at $3199 brand new with a nice warranty to boot.

You would be surprised how many of these virile young folks handhold the Canon 500/f4 IS and it weighs slightly over 9lbs. ! :p

Regards, ;)

its only half a pound more than the 300mm f/2.8L IS...

Depending on how its balanced it could be easier to handhold than you think

I had no trouble hand holding the old 120-300 all day. It was a very well balanced lens and didn't feel as heavy as it reported to be. The versatility of this lens is going to be hard to beat.

Waiting for reviews.... then purchase...

Not really worried about handholding it , it's the idea of lugging it around for 3 days at a baseball tourament ;).

This is one lens I'm really looking forward to. With no update to the aging 100-400 on the horizon (that's a guess obviously!) and a likely stratospheric price tag for the 200-400 f/4, I'm hoping this is going to be the enthusiasts telephoto zoom of choice. Using extenders you've got 120-420 covered inside f/2.8-4, and 120-600 covered inside f/2.8-5.6 which will be amazing if the iq holds up. 4 Stops of stabilizer will be fantastic too. Here's hoping the reviews are positive and the price tag is sub £2000 because (if they are and it is) Sigma will be onto a winner.

The earthquake in Japan might delay the lens? =X

I think the Sigma mount versions have already shown up in the USA, so it should not be too long before Canon gets it here too.

BTW, I think B&H usually gets the first pick of new lenses, so keep a look there.

B&H has it listed in the Sigma mount, but the image is clearly the non-OS version and it's $1000 less than the other mounts. In addition, Sigma mount versions of Sigma lenses are usually the last to show up because the others usually sell much better. So, I'm not sure if the Sigma mount is yet available.

Like all good lenses, it'll need a stop down to resolve well with a 2x TC.
It's the wide open 300mm and 1.4xTC performance I'm interested in.
I just hope this thing has a faster AF and can track birds in flight better.

On the barrel it has a red dot, and says Pro300 DG...

gocolts, if you have the original 1st batch release of the Kenko 1.4 DGX is it the Pro300 or the MC4 with a Red Dot ? Or is it a DG version ? Tell me the specific nomenclature Model on the box or barrel ?

The 1st released batch of the DGX versions were NOT compatible with the Canon 70-200 f4 IS USM lens and would not allow the IS mechanism to function. It was also incompatible with 3 other known Canon lenses but i forgot the specific ones.

Kenko THK Global later made revisions to the internal circuitry and stamped either a Green or Blue Dot on the latest releases of the DGX versions that are now compatible.

Regards, Ron ;)

Thats the same one i have. Its the original and not the newer DGX versions with any revised circuitry.

But it is a reporting TC with most all canon bodys & lenses. I have to tape the pins to get it to work with the 100-400L or the 400/f5.6 at f8 on a crop body.

All I can say is Wow. This has been the lens I've been waiting for and I hope the reviews and sample pics looks as good as those train shots.

Sample comparisons with 300mm L f2.8 IS

http://www.dchome.net …id=1020682&extra=page%3D1 (external link)

Has shots with 2x canon TC.

edit: actually looks better with the 2x than the canon 300mm f2.8L IS, lol.
