I started another thread https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1359787, but I gather here it might get more attention.

I am wondering how people are finding the Sports 120-300 for shooting what it was named for - Sports.

Does anyone have any experience shooting sports on the Sports version?

Also, how do you find the tracking on AI SERVO - on a 7D, 5D3 or 1D4 or 1Dx?

And lastly, how do you find the lens with both/either a Sigma and/or Canon tele converter?

Kobeson,

I have the new sports version of the lens and use it with a 1dx (and a Sigma 2 x converter). To be honest, I havent used it as much as I would have liked to, but when I do, I love it.

I am using the 1dx & Sports lens to cover the Extreme Games (wakeboarding, FMX, Paintabll etc) being held here in Perth next month so hopefully I can post a lot more shots after then.

This is a pic I took socially from my boat using the 1dx & 120-300 combo as an example.

Thanks Gabe.

Just curious as to what type of tripod / monopod setup people are using with their 120-300 lenses.

I prefer to shoot handheld when ever possible, but with the weight of this lens that is not always practicable.

If I do use a steadying device, I will usually use a monopod as opposed to a tripod (I just find tripods too bulky & restrictive as a whole).

My monopod & tripod are fitted with ball heads, but I am finding that they dont seem to suit the Sigma so I have just ordered a 360 degree gimbal head for the tripod.

Is anbody else using a gimbal setup with their lens, and if so, how are you finding it?

When I use a tripod which is a fairly rare occurrence with either the 500 or the 120-300, I use a Manfrotto 393 long lens mount. The sliding plate is great for adjusting the balance point for different bodies and TCs.

Mostly I'll use a beanbag for support when out and about, and for birds in flight I use a pared down Bush Hawk.

I use a Gitzo GT3542LS with a Jobu Jr3 Deluxe gimball head, great combo with this lens. Not overly heavy and very sturdy.

I used to use the Sirui K30x ballhead and it can hold the lens well without creep or any other issues. However a ballhead simply isn't handy for moving subjects, reframing or following a subject is a pain due to the size and weight of the lens.

I use a Velbon El Carmagne 640, which I got in an insane deal a couple years ago. For a head I use some Vanguard ball head which is long due for replacement for a gimbal head...

The Disabled Surfer's Association is an organisation my son and I have been involved in for quite a few years now.

It is is all volunteer based and provides an invaluable service to the disabled community in allowing them to enjoy the thrills of surfing the same as an able bodied person. It is certainly one of the most rewarding and uplifting things I have ever done.

The smiles on their faces is what it is all about. :-)

I was sitting outside reading the Sunday paper and one of our cats came out with me. She was just laying on the grass posing so I grabbed a quick pic of her.

I went out yesterday and got a few keepers before yielding to the 30+mph wind gusts. Not to be deterred I set up for the moon later, but the wind didn't calm at all once the sun went down. So back inside I was still itching to photograph something.....What does 300mm f2.8 + sigma 2x tc + Kenko 2x tc + 7D + handheld shutter release + water + food coloring + a modified off camera Vivitar 283 get you?

1200mm uncropped, denoise only

My wife's response: "They're nice, but don't you already have some water droplet pictures?"
