Anyone have an opinion regarding the 120-300 Sports lens vs Sigma's 300 f2.8 prime?

In regards to AF performance.

With and without teleconverters?

I am close to pulling the trigger on the S version of the 120-300, just making sure I have done my homework :)

EDIT: also, for those that use UV filters, which brands are any good at 105mm? To be honest, I use Kenko Pro1D usually and they do the job fine. I notice on amazon the Sigma 105mm UV is ~$100, I have read some people say it doesn't affect the image quality. Anybody got any advice?

I've been using the Sigma 105mm filter. It seems to match up well with the lens.

at last some aviation !! Well done. Slow shutter panning with the 3.5 kilo dumbell. Hows the lens with this subject for you? Decent amount of keepers or more of hit and miss? Cant wait to find myself at Mach loop one day, soon i hope

zooming takes some getting used to as its the opposite way to the 70-200 and where the zoom ring is, its pretty far from the tripod collar where im used to holding..

i also pick my moments on when to shoot (not machine gunning like most)

i shoot all my aviation hand held - and with OS off.. (i don't have it on my 70-200)

again with the tele - hand held no OS

i shot a local Marathon with it - wish i had a monopod for that, my shoulder was feeling it after constant 2.5 hours of shooting.. (will dig some out and post too)

Anyone have experience buying Sigma refurbs? Thinking of selling my 100-400 and buying this lens for youth hockey and wildlife using a TC. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Warn. From own and of quite many other fellow 120-300 owners experience (except the current version of the lens) i have to suggest to absolutely thoroughly test-drive any copy of this lens before purchase. Chances are though that if the lens has been refurbished by Sigma JAPAN and it has not been abused since, probably would be working ok.

Hi Mike,

I bought a refurbed 'S' version for $2,699. The warranty is 90 days plus another 90 (my AMEX doubles the rebate). I love it. And if anything goes wrong I'm hoping it doesn't cost $900 to fix it which is how much I saved over buying new.

Love the lens!

Dennis

Thanks Dennis. I was looking at the non 's' version but that's good to hear.
