Ya I dont understand the one MFD to INF and Back testing. I just need a lens to track well and this one seems to be sharp, but the sport you can make it faster but that 1300 increase in price is hard to do...

I haven't had a problem with tracking using this lens that didn't end up being either my fault or that of the body. I haven't tried tracking vehicles oncoming at 250+km/h but it has done fine with things under 200km/h in the past with tc's. I guess that the 2.0 tc might slow it in empirical testing a bit but it has still been super quick in practice for me, hardly noticeable difference from bare.

Even when my D4 was being stupid (turned out it just needed a firmware re-flash but drove me nuts for a while) this lens would snap into focus quick enough to capture. It was just the body not tracking after initial acquisition properly at that time.

I took a little trip west in April, getting home in early May--about a month and 6500 or so miles of driving. Among the things I took was my Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 Sport and the Sigma 1.4 and 2x TCs.

A 120mm view of the rural area as you approach Devil's Tower National Monument.

A tighter shot, still 120mm. I don't think you can see the people in the frame.

This is a crop from the image above. Here two people are visible in the lower right corner and one just above mid-level is climbing the face of the rocks.

The same climber, with the 2x TC on the Sigma for a 600mm shot.

Completely off topic and quoting from a while back, but I don't get to brag about a lot of things. I've climbed Devil's Tower!

Tried in 1997. We got most of the way up but had to turn around due to darkness. One of the coolest things I've ever done was rappelling off that thing during a full Moon.

Went back in 1998 and made it to the top. It was the fulfillment of a long time dream. When I was 16 in 1981, my parents took me on a trip out west. I saw people climbing the tower and thought I would never be able to do something like that. In my 20's, I took up a little rock climbing and realized it was a possibility. Finally got up it when I was 33. Man, I wish we had digital back then. My only photos are from a disposable film camera.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

There was a day when I would have tried it. :)
But that was a long time ago.

Just got my 120-300 OS NON Sport lens, loving it so far but only took it to the zoo for some testing today. Both using a Canon 1.4 EX Needed to really fix the lens micro focus by around -18 in camera though to get it this sharp

Small update for any of those who might be of help. I love the Sigma, its hits so many right points but boy its fails at AF! I have not figured it out if its my body or the lens but so far it just cant track anything. I went to the zoo again with the lens bare bones nothing else. The AF accuracy is 1/5 with an animal looking around. If any animal move its like 2/10. It just cant hit the spot. If an object moves you see the lens just jump around focus like hard stops not smooth all the time. Now when the lens hits focus its an amazing image in just the right zoom range and size. Im hoping Its part camera body af system so I can fix that or a simple lens fix I can have done and not that I do in fact have a good copy that just doesnt do what i need to do. Any thoughts on this would be great. Ill add two images of one sequence so you can see. The images are just seconds apart no moment anywhere just holding done shutter.... (These are cropped of course.)

Got the Sigma working a good amount better, This is at just over 800mm and a crop, its the Sigma 120-300 with a 2x on a 1.3 crop body so lots of reach going on here.
