Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 EX OS

I got myself the 120-300 2.8 S this weekend and took a few shots with it.For what i have seen i am very pleased.
Now waiting for the tc 2001.

No pictures to share, but having just sent my lens back for the fourth repair in four years I thought I'd post a warning to others regarding this lens. The fault is recurrent and manifests itself as a failure to lock focus, with the AF motor seeming to "jitter" or hunt without locking, or locking only rarely. The diagnosis is "failure of the motor rotation sensor" or MR sensor for short. I have been told by Sigma servicing that the fault occurs due to infrequent use of the lens and this leads to lubricants drying out or migrating to areas they ought not to be. The MR sensor includes mechanical components and it seems that lack of use causes malfunction

Now I have never experienced a problem like this or any other with any of my Canon lenses, some now nine years old, but my seldom used Sigma lens seems to suffer on an annual basis as I wheel it out of retirement to shoot some summer events. Every time I do so the lens is US and has to be sent in for repair. By the time it come back the events I wanted to shoot are over. As unsatisfactory as this situation is I thought it was worth posting as a warning to others who might find themselves using their own 120-300/2.8 OS (non sport) infrequently.

On a positive note Sigma has picked up the lens and will be repairing FOC, despite the lens now being a year outside warranty. They have explained the situation regarding the root cause of the problem so I guess it is my responsibility to make sure the lens continues to work. Either that or I sell it to someone who can use it on a more frequent basis.

This is not a grumble type post, but I hope it serves as a helpful warning to others.

Well a year has passed and my photography passion is still dormant, so I have not used the lens at all for actually photographing anything. However, I have set myself a monthly reminder to give MF and AF a good workout and so far so good - no further problems with the AF. Potentially a worthwhile maintenance tip for those owners who leave this lens on the shelf most of the year or longer.

First time posting in a while and it looks like this threads gone a bit dead! Taken earlier this year when it was still warm outside! Both photos taken with sigma 2x converter attached, the harrier was quite a long way in the distance so a pretty heavy crop.

i still use mine weekly...i just don't post much here, because i think i'd be the only one

Couldn't believe my luck when I spotted this one, still had my camera in my bag so had to get it off my back, get set up and try and creep around to get a clear shot without spooking it.

It must have been so surprised by me that it didn't know what to do.

Bought a used copy of this lens along with a Canon 2x. The first photo is without the teleconverter. The second one is. Both taken with a 7dMII
