Telephoto Converter for G6

I just bought a Canon G6 and I'm adding already more accesories to expand my photo capturing possibilities...I started to evaluate the Telephoto TC-DC58 and to my surprise the camera manual states that "you may only use this lens with the focal length set to the maximum telephoto setting" ?? and then it adds that "at other settings the image will not appear correctly":(
Does this mean that this lens will only allow me one zoom setting ? that's it ? max optical setting if I want to use this lens ? :(
Does anybody have any experience with this specific lens??

Thanks.

Alex

Yea, I have the Telephoto coverter for my G6 also. You mainly have to have it at full zoom range without vignetting to occur, which are the dark spots that come up in the picture in the corners. I have found some good uses for it, like for example, I took a picture the other night w/ it of the moon, and I actually got all of the craters. Now I know I couldn't do that w/out the lense. If you want to see it I will post it for you. But overall, it is a good lense to have.

Just be aware that the Canon lens does not have front threads. If you want to use some type of filter (UV for protection, polarizer, etc.) you can't with the Canon lens. That's one reason I chose the Tiffen 2X TC. my 2 cents ...

Alex,

vignetting happens with virtually all teleconverters (e.g. Kenko KNT-20 or Olympus TCON-17). It means that your usable zoom range with your camera is something like 35-135 (without) and 240-270 (with 2x teleconverter).

Best regards,
Andy

Yes, I am going to buy wide and tele converter, have bought already two adapters, one for each convertor, for easy use.

And about moon, I several times tried to do a good shot of it, without converter and the results .... awful, so would be nice to see your picture and have general advice how to picture the moon (but maybe that discussion not for that thread)

Isn't my camera now looks cool? :-)
With converter will be even better!

Hey Andrew, is there anything on the front of your adapter, like a filter or something, just wondering. Anyway, I had posted this on one of the other forums I have belonged to, and they all said it was a nice shot, even though it does have this glow to it, I think it was still pretty cool my G6 could get it. O yea, I didn't do anything to it in Photoshop either. But here it is: I do have another one, it is more centered in the shot, but they both look the same.

O yea, I forgot to answer the rest of your question Andrew. I didn't really do anything to picture it the right way, I just let camera do it all automatically. Even though I did try to take in in the P and Tv modes, but since I had RAW on, it doesn't allow digital zoom to be used, but I mad eup for that in landscape mode. Hope that helps!

Hey Thanks for the response...and yes, the more I read the more I realize that this lens would require a fix zoom setting (although it seems it allows some play with it before vigneting occurs).
I knew when I didn't buy an SLR that I was doing some compromises and hopefully I didn't make too many (just a serious aficionado here but not a professional photographer). Could you post that pic ? I bought it mainly for some sporting events that I may go to hopefully it will do the trick.
Thanks,

Alex

Gil,
thanks for your repsonse!! Yes, I evaluated the Tiffen telephoto (lensmate site) but after looking at the comparison shots they have at that site (comparison between Tiffen, Kenko and Canon OEM) I noticed that the one that allowed for maximum variation from full zoom before any vigneting occurs was the OEM (it allowed to be zoomed back out to 136mm).
The fact that it does not have threads kinda suprises me, (how much more could it cost to do so and how much would it add to users satisfaction ?) Canon missed the point on that one.
I think for the most part there are many different opinions out there about what's best and what's not, in all it is great to hear from everybody.
Thanks for your reply,

Alex

I got the Tiffen 2x teleconverter and immediately tried a moon shot. After tons of pictures without it, I finally can see the moon better!

Altough I won't use it that much, its great to have. I use my Raynox DCR 6600 pro wide angle every day. I love this lens!

Here's the moon shot.

Alex,

FWIW, I have a manfrotto/bogen 482 micro ball head on a monopod. I popped the Tiffen 2X on the G3 then put it all on the mono. Got a not so pleasant surprise. In the vertical position the bogen 482 cannot support the TC. It points downward. :( And I did tighten that thing for all I was worth. Horizontal position was no problem. Oddly enough the bogen 482 is supposed to support 4.4 lbs (2.2 kg). The weight of the Tiffen 2X TC is 14.3 oz., according to lensmate. Was disappointed because on cloudy days with the TC the camera often drops to a slow shutter speed and I want/need the stability of at least a monopod. Was definitely a hassle trying to hold the TC in position, keep the mono steady and gently push the shutter release.

Anyone reading this know of a head that will fit on a monopod and hold the G3 with the Tiffen TC in position in both the vertical and horizontal positions? Ummm, one that won't put me in the poor house? Thanks.

Gil

Hi there...

I have a Kenko form lensmate and used it only one when I was on vacation...I want to sell that lens since now I own a dSLR and I don't need it. It is in perfect shape with its original box...PM me if you or anyone is interested...

I have never needed it after using it on my vacation since simply I didn't need more zoom than I have but the WA lens that I have has gotten more use than it and I really recomend you consider buying that too...I have to admit, the kenko is a wise buy because it is the same color as the camera and the G6 with it looks just like one mean machine...

Regards,

Artan

Gil,
thanks for the reply...

yes it took a long time to decide which lens to get (telephoto) and did as deep as a research as you can do considering the number of options. First thing that comes to mind is why doesn't anybody make a more than 2x converter (given how popular non DSLR are...) but then comparing the available lenses...
I went to lensmate site where they are kind enough to show true comparisons between what they sell and even thing they don't (such as OEM). In the first instance around, I chose the Canon converter based solely on their pics and what they reported and must say I'm quite please with the lense. On the second time around I ended up buying from them the wide angle (the Rayonox) and their support was also excelent.

Thanks for participating in this forum, appreciate your comments.
