After a string of cloudy nights I got a clear spell last night to capture Jupiter and Uranus together. Just in time too as these next few nights the full moon will be very close, spoiling the sky.
I was shooting from a fixed tripod, so restricted my shutter speeds to the longest I could get away with and not detect any trailing. Perhaps surprisingly that's 1 second at 200mm and 0.5 second at 400mm! I also used mirror lock up.
Here's the first: 40D with 70-200/4L at 200mm, f/4, 1s, ISO 1600, noise reduced in Lightroom 3.
Then closer with the 100-400L at 400mm, f/5.6, 0.5s, ISO 1600. I was very impressed that even with such a short exposure, no stacking, the faintest stars visible on the original are magnitude 10. I also labelled Jupiter's Gallilean satellites.
