Pretty happy with my metal Ranger heads right now. :)

100%. Unless the pack gets a lot more powerful, I think I'm planning on buying a few "old/outdated" ranger rs speed AS's once everyone "upgrades."

Maybe that giant handle is a stash box ... I mean storage compartment. ;)

Thought I was being too critical, but the more I look at it the uglier it gets -if that's even possible.

The Fisher Price analogy isn't a bad one and the size of that frackin' handle relative to the body is a righteous 'WTF?'. As Mumbles indicated, packing a couple of those beast would be nasty. I initially thought the handle might folded fwd, but don't think so. Given the case is now plastic, I wonder if the zoom gearing is as well? Forget looks, did anyone give a thought to the real-life use and carriage of this thing?

I don't shoot Eli anymore, but zoom or no zoom, if I owned older metal Ranger heads I wouldn't be in any hurry to 'upgrade'. Nasty, just nasty.

I have a better comparison. I knew it reminded me of something but I couldn't quite put a finger on it. When I used to do Muay Thai, we did kettlebell workouts.

I think you guys might be a bit harsh. :) No, it's not pretty, but I will reserve my judgement until I see this thing in the flesh. If the head is really small, that handle might not look out of proportion.

That said, I am still happy to have my old Ranger heads, and a little alarmed at Elinchrom's trend towards plastic casings.

Haha, you're not!

Although incredibly heavy and tough to boot, I find it indispensable when shooting outdoors in windy conditions or with the El Octa. It's so damn sturdy, I've developed a bad habit of not using counterweights with it, because it just seems to hold things up anyway.

I only have one nitpick with it - I don't quite get the boom arm fastening thing. I can't reliably loosen and fasten it, atleast not all the time. That safety bolt doesnt make any difference whatsoever. Any tips?

Plastic is lighter, I dont care what it looks like as long as it does a good job

I do care what it looks like but it won't stop me from making a purchase if it's the gear I need.

Maybe Elinchrom is overcompensating after all of the issues with broken handles on the RX strobes. The RX plastic handle is very spindly.

And just what pressing problem is the new Ranger head addressing? It seems to me if Elinchrom felt the need to re-engineer a flash head, they should have started with the Quadra.

Wait, what? RX Heads handle's break off? That's the first i've ever heard of that.

I agree the Ranger heads are fine. The Quadra mount could stand to have a little more metal and rigidity to it. Agreed.

That, looks like this:

Hmmm, I just noticed something. In the background of the picture with the zooming head is Digital AS power pack which makes me wonder if that zooming head is attached to that pack. If it is, then it can't be a Ranger head.

I think those are other heads attached to other packs in the background.
