Sadly, you're probably right.

Maybe Elinchrom should hire a few of the Hensel designers. The Porty heads are actually portable:

It's not that they needed a designer from Hensel, they just needed to not design it like a kettlebell, that's all. :D

A slightly larger version of the Quadra with a handle would have been better than this one.

I know the every so often a manufacturer comes out with a new design that seems ass-backwards but I have to believe there was a real reason that motivated this new design, other than just the adjustable/focusable flash tube.

There must have either been enough complaints or suggestions or something about the design that suggested or required the large handle. I would find it hard to believe that it was just a bad design idea for no good reason.....well.... then again in the 1970's AMC did produce a car you may all remember called the Pacer? Ugliness at its finest.

I don't really see why the Ranger heads needed to be "smaller"! They were pretty small already.

The bottom line is the new Ranger will be compared with the older one once it's on B&H's site. People will ask if they should buy one but that it looks hideous. They'll wish it looked more like the old one or at least like the Quadra shape-wise.

Because the way it looks and the price tag it will carry, it better perform and do everything the old Ranger can and then some. Otherwise, that zoomable head won't silence the comments about the ugly body, big handle, and plastic casing for the next few decades. Current Rangers are used in certain conditions (i.e., harsh weather, mountainous trek, etc.) the new one might fall short on because of the plastic body.

Maybe they didn't need to be smaller and it just worked out that the new design allowed them to shave off some material and have more of a form fitting mold now that it's all about plastics. I think this is just part of the trend in technology.

I predict that in no time at all we'll see a lot of owners and users of the new heads with the new pack coming after that and like anything else, the new look will be fine and very much accepted.

It's going to be the only one available soon, and then people won't have the option.

It might also be better because of that.

I am gonna go ahead and say that I would love a plastic Ranger RX. :P
I also like the design of the new lights (Quadra, D-Lite, BXRi). Plastic can be very sturdy and durable.
There's a reason Kacey makes his dish the way it is ;)

That said... I had a shoot at an old abandoned stone quarry yesterday and lost one of my Quadra's port caps in the darkness. Went back early today at 6 am and found it after a few minutes of checking the spots we shot at.
The Ranger RX also had a problem though. I was using the Universal Speed Skyport receiver on the sync port and the outer thread of the sync port came loose and I couldn't sync through the port anymore because I could not screw the cable on tight enough. Had to resort to slave :(

Given now it's plastic what will a ranger pack n head weigh?
Internal skyport means it'll function with the iPhone app too?

Sorry I've been reading scraps and haven't got the full picture

Anyone happen to notice that the delfectors Elinchrom is using at Photokina on their latest and greatest look like the ones we buy from B&H or amazon, etc and NOTHING like the ones that [godfather] was selling and stating they were the "new" versions?

QUOTED IMAGE

Just sayin....

off-topic but what's going on with the dude's head on the left?
