at f/8 or f/11 where he was shooting, it is quite possible.

How about at 2.8? :lol::lol::lol:

EDIT: Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a dick. But your argument about shooting at f/8 or f/11 can be used for pretty much every lens in existence. They're all sharp at f/8 but that's not the point. It's the other apertures that show the quality of the individual lens.

even if he was shooting at f/5.6, the 17-55 wouldnt be that much sharper. i'm just saying if he doesnt need 2.8, then theres no reason why he can't stick with the 18-55.

Kit lens sharper than 17-55?

Riiiiiiiiight... bw!:lol::lol::lol: I'll have some of whatever you're smoking...

Well since I have his previous 17-55 I can honestly say the 18-55 IS kit lens was sharper than the 17-55 before calibration. I have pics to prove it and ill post some tests I did for canon. Ill post some when I get home.

Although I agree that the 17-55 is a better lens in most categories, the 18-55mm is tack sharp on my 7D as well. Not so much on my T1i (probably needed calibration?), but when I 1st mounted it on my 7D and took a shot - I was amazed as well.

I find it quite interesting that you mention the difference between the 7D and T1i. I've been somewhat disappointed with my 18-55mm IS lens since I took it out of the box. At first I thought I was perhaps expecting too much out of it, but when I put the 55-250mm IS lens on(even with a full stack of kenko extension tubes) I get great shots.... and my 50mm 1.8 performs equally as well, if not better.

My 18-55 is almost never on my camera(unless I need to go wider than 50mm) and I've been considering selling it or sending it back to canon since I'm not too happy with the results. I first thought it was just a front focusing issue, but after inspecting some photos... I think its just plain soft.

The 55-250 IS I had the chance to use exhibited a lot of vignetting, even stopped down an F-stop...much more than the 70-210/3.5-4.5....and my primes show virtually none.

I use the 18-55mm IS on my 7d as well and find it to be amazingly sharp, sometimes I think I must just have a really good copy or something. I tried to replace it with a Tamron 17-50mm VC but the Tamron wasn't sharp at all at f2.8, and even stopped down to the f3.5-5.6 (or even F/8) of the kit lens, the 18-55 was still sharper, noticeably, so I returned it.

I agree that the 18-55IS is great for the money.
Have got a 24-105L wich sometimes is just not wide enough,
it really is a good addition especially when stopped down to F8 or F11.

I've got both lenses in my bag. The 17-55 is borrowed from a friend. I've used both of them on my T2i. At similar apertures, I'm having a difficult time justifying the cost of a 17-55. I shoot mostly primes, so I have low light indoor speed covered. I think I'll be keeping the 18-55 IS II for as long as I have a crop body.

I like how sharp my landscape shots are with the 17-55 wide open. :)
