Has anybody successfully used the 350D in "PC Connection" mode on mac os X 10.4.2 (tiger)? I need to do this so that I can use my newly aquired ibook to control the camera.

I should emphasize that downloading images is not my problem, I can set the camera to "Print/PTP" mode and retrieve images, or attach a separate CF card reader. My problem is remote camera control with EOS Capture, which needs the camera in "PC Connection" mode, which also seems to not be recognized by my mac.

If anybody has done this, or worked out a solution, please let me know. (I should have stuck with a PC and windows :))

P.S. This is my first post to this forum. I found this place with a google search to try to resolve my problem, actually, and stumbled across an old thread that mentions something related (which I tried, to no avail). Should probably go see what the photo galleries here are like.

Cheers,
Walter

From everything I've read, any of the Canon Software is not compatible with Tiger, I use Tiger at work and havnt even been able to download my RAWs as Iphoto doesnt seem to recognize them.

iphoto 5 designed for raw prior to release of XT, so not compatible. Same problem with much other 3rd party raw software, PC or mac. I use iPhoto for raw images off my 20D and it's fine. The nice thing about iphoto is it's easy for my wife & kids to use.

Yeah, I can download, view and convert both JPEG and RAW images. It's remote camera operation that's a problem.

Walter,

From what I can gather this feature just doesn't work yet in Mac OS X 10.4.x

There are discussions about it on the Apple discussion boards but as yet no resolution.

At this moment you have two choices

1) "Downgrade" to Mac OS X 10.3.x

2) Sit tight and wait for either Canon or Apple to sort this out.

At the moment I've settled on choice 2 but I may well install 10.3.x on my "spare" 80gig partition to see what I'm missing ;)

Thanks a lot, advocate. That's not what I wanted to hear, but at least it's something of an answer. Hopefully canon will release an update soon. Incidentally, which apple discussion boards are you talking about?

You can fix the "PC Connection" mode in tiger by applying a small patch to a system file...

Go to /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/Type4Camera.app/Contents/Resources/ and edit DeviceInfo.plist to remove all references to 350D and Digital rebel XT. Reboot. Fixed.

It's not a change for the casual user, obviously...

I've had numerous correspondences with Canon tech support on this matter, and as recently as last week's update to their Browser (whatever it's called), they still say no fix for Tiger. No reason why, nor date for release.

Can you tell me where you found this fix please? I've googled and googled and not found any reference to it :)

it is compatible with previous versions of OS X, just not Tiger, as the software was released after the camera and no one bothered to make it compatible.

On my eMac with USB1 it doesn't work. On my iBook, with USB2, it works very good.

I tried that, without any luck. Actually I think I first found it on this very forum:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=84642

I got a response from canon today. It was suggested that I either try accessing remote capture through Digital Photo Professional instead of CameraWindow, and if that doesn't work that I should periodically check canon's website for possibly software updates. No mention of any plans to actually develop said software updates... but hey.

Maybe I can downgrade to Panther.
