hey folks, i am returning my lens to Adorama. i suspected the IS not working properly, and then all of a sudden the lens started hunting, focussing and making all kind of noise on it's own. (i put the 70-200 IS on my 40D, no problems with that lens.)

this 17-55MM IS lens was refurbished, seems QC missed this one.

i should have just bought a new one from Henry's, which i think i'll do when my visa is creditted for my return., save the grief of returns and shipping costs AGAIN!

anyone else have this problem with their Canon 17-55 IS?

thanks for reading.

Mine has been trouble free (knocks on wood). It was purchased new and not refurbished.

Although I do believe the IS has been problematic with this lens. I did a quick search and was unable to come up with anything here, maybe someone else will chime in for ya.

Best of luck, it is a great lens!

also i noticed when i would half depress the shutter button, the image would 'jump' as i see the image through the eyepiece as it locked on focus, which i thought o be out of the ordinary, almost like the IS wants to work, but can't or won't . then it made all kinds of sounds, so i returned it today, it's in the mail on it's way back.

i'll just watch the forums here to see if one comes up for sale for a few days.
thanks for the feedbcak.

Had exact same problem with 17-55. Although it took a while for reseller to admit a problem really existed with the lens, they finally accepted to send it back to canon for further tests and it came out IS was defective.
Manufacturer replace the IS at no cost even though warranty had expired by two months.

best of luck with your problem
