So I thought I would play with using a single light in my house because I was bored asked my son to pose for me.

Here is where we are shooting in the house down a hallway. I thought If I did this I could have the hall drop into shadow when the flash went off to make it look like a grayed out background.

Here is a shot straight out of the camera with on camera flash.

Then here is one in the same location with the flash off camera and I added a reflector to camera left to help soften the shadow and add light to the eyes.

It is fun to see what is possible with one light in a potentially bad lighting situation just for fun if you see other ways to improve the light please let me know. I know the pose if awful was just playing with the light here. I wanted to use only one light so I need to think of a way to get a little more light behind to separate him from the background he likes dark shirts go figure.

Thanks for looking

Sam

Second one is a huge improvement.
in such asmall room bouncing against walls / ceiling or use of a diffusor will make a lot of difference.

Thanks Hennie are you saying I should use an additional diffuser that the light is still too strong?

Thanks for the comment.

Great job on both. It is fun to experiment and create outside of the "rules" Kudos!

IMO, You really can't do much creativity with on camera flash... But great job on experimenting, practice makes things perfect as they say.
