You'll need a FlexTT5 for each of your remote flash units and either the MiniTT1 or the FlexTT5 on the camera.

go for TT5 all around - makes battery managing easier

All the above are correct :)

The Mini TT1 is a Transmitter ONLY.
The Flex TT5 are Transceivers, which means they are both a transmitter and receiver.

For each flash/strobe, you will need a receiver or a transceiver
You will need a transmitter or transceiver on your camera.

MiniTT1's require a CR-2450 lithium battery (or CR-2354)
FlexTT5's require 2 AA batteries.

As SMP_Homer stated, it's easier to just get the FlexTT5's, since AA batteries are easy to obtain. Plus, FlexTT5's only cost a little more than the MiniTT1, so the FlexTT5's are the better buy.

What about the Pocket Wizard Plus II? Are they not transmitters and receivers as well? Couldn't you just get two of them?

PW Plus IIs do not send ETTl information and can only be used to trigger a flash in manual mode.

From the PW website: The AC3 ZoneController for Canon is the gem of the ControlTL™ product line. Add it to your on-camera MiniTT1™ Transmitter or FlexTT5™ Transceiver and you instantly have three zones of flash control. Whether working in E-TTL II or Manual mode, you now have control over all your flashes directly from the camera’s position. Put your flashes wherever you want, without worrying about having to access them during a shoot. With the AC3 ZoneController, you are in total control of your flash.

I would love some pocket wizards but I can't see spending that much money for the transmitters and receivers and then having to buy and install goofy shields if using speedlights to get any kind of range out of them.

@ccp900 I have been looking hard at the pixel knights but just not sure they are reliable enough at this stage in their development.

If I can figure out exactly what I need with the Radio Poppers they look like the best option available right now.

if you want reliability certainly go with the radio poppers.

the pw are very shaky - now experienced again with the Ac3.
and even hopeless is the support at pw

don't you have to have a flash on your hot shoe set to master for radio poppers?

You don't really need the RF shields. I have no problems without the RF shields.
