Well, since I don't need the cropfactor, and I don't need more than 8 Mp (Mostly even 6Mp is enough) so I'ld rather be able to shoot and work faster because of a smaller size than lose the wide angle again. What I think is confusing is the difference in Crop factor. How do you show in the finder you're using it? Seems bound to happen that you think your shooting FF, when you're using the CF, at least for me ;)

I don't thnk that could really happen. There is a rectangle in the viewfinder, and the corners of it light up in red when it's in high speed mode so you know you're cropping.

I agree it's not for everyone, but for those who want both a studio/landscape camera and a fast sports/birding camera, it's a great idea.

What Phil is describing is how the Noink D2X handles this...
I know a few D2X owners and this does not seem to be an issue at all. with the red outline lit up.. it is hard to mess it up.

Of course some the D2X owners I know never use the crop function.. but others seem to use it more often than not. Options it seems are rarely a bad thing.

Frankly with the D2X starting at 1.5X the option is less appealing IMHO...
But on a full frame like the 5D that is otherwise limited to 3FPS.. dropping down to 8MP @ say 5-8FPS would make the camera twice as handy!

Of course.. as mentioned.. Canon is unlikely to adopt this now as it would seriously cut into the sale of the two 1D series cameras

Yeah, I agree. I didn't realize the Nikon D2x was a choice between 1.5x and 2.0x. Yuck!!! Leave it to Noink to do something like that. I'd rather have full frame and 1.3x.

The Canon website shows the 1DMKIIn due out in September, and the 5D out in October. How come I've only run across 5D's for sale (pre-order), like at Amazon and B&H, but not the 1D?

Probably because they want to unload their stock of existing 1DMkII's first. I see the "N" as just a relatively minor upgrade, certainly not a new model.

The 5D is an entirely new product ... no existing model to replace.

Does that mean it may not be available until the existing 1DMKII's are sold? I agree, it's a minor upgrade, but for someone buying a new one, probably worth it.

I think I'm ready to upgrade from my 10D, and while initially I was thrilled about the 5D, and planned to purchase it, by the time you add the grip, it's going to be very close in price range, and still not have the features of the 1D series.

While I was dreaming of the 1DmKII upgrade to pretty much stay as is, only more megapixels, I'm guessing that "that" camera is still 1 or 2 years out, and probably 4 or 5 before it's $4k or less.

I completely agree ... if I were looking to upgrade I would definitely hold out for the "n" version. I imagine they'll sell them side-by-side once they're in stock, but they're probably not in a big hurry to take preorders when they still have older MkII's in the warehouse. Probably not in a hurry to lower their price for the previous version, either.

Keep looking ... I'm sure there will be some merchants who don't have an existing stock of 1D Mk II's.

(I'm just guessing, anyway ... could be completely wrong.)

The opposite is the case in the UK - existing 1D Mk IIs are disappearing fast and most retailers are taking 'N' pre-orders. The 'N' is going to be £800 ($1400) more expensive for no improvement other than body cosmetics... no wonder the remaining stock of the older model is shifting quickly! Still I guess a bigger LCD screen (that nobody ever complained about in the first place) and sunken lettering are well worth a £800 premium eh

Ive Pre-ordered a 1D mkIIn from Warehouse Express (UK) and I had to phone them today and while on the phone I asked about my order, Im one of the first to order from them so Ill be in the first batch but as of yet they havnt had confermation on the exact delivery date.
Canon have told them that there wont be the same problem with suply as there was with the mkII (guess not as many people will be buying it). He also mentioned that the price they have up at the moment is the recomended retail price and if there is any reduction between now and the due date that will be passed on to pre-order customers.
Ive had a look around in the UK for a mkII and there arnt many left and some of the places that still have them are still asking alot of money for waht is now a discontinued camera (Jessops £2500) Ive already got a 1D mkII so this will be a back up, it will be intresting to put them side by side and see if there area any undocumented changes in the 1D mkIIn.

Andy
