Sep 22, 2010 22:10 | #1 This is a sundown scene at Zion National Park in Utah. Haven't done much landscape or HDR work before this recent vacation. If the water appeared to be more reflective, it would make it more eye catching. I like how the 1st one has bright background, but like if i were shooting there, I would have tried to get the foreground to have more vivid colors.. jus my opinions - don't take them too seriously Flickr

More info | Sep 23, 2010 10:24 | #4 The best kind of HDR shot is where it's not apparent that an HDR technique was used. You've done well in this respect. On the other hand, HDR is used to correct for the poor dynamic range of digital cameras in settings that have high dynamic range. You haven't really done this in either shot, sad to say. The first rule of HDR should be to try to reduce the dynamic range of the setting. You seem to have done this in the first one by a judicious choice of time of day. The light on the distant mountains is very nice. The stream and foliage in the foreground did not receive that light. By lightening them up in HDR, I think you took away contrast from the mountains and drew the eye away from them. The foliage also needs more contrast in order to make it less dull. This shot could be more improved if you made the mountains the centerpiece and forgot about HDR. Joe

Sep 23, 2010 15:32 | #5 Here are two attempted improvements of the images I posted here last night. The first is the Zion Sundown done in Portrait mode and using Details Enhancer in Photomatix Pro. The second is not an HDR image but a merger of two exposures of the Zion waterfall in order to improve exposure of the water. It has been, but I think the problem is with my eyes. Having a horrible time lately with my vision. Will take a look at this image on a larger screen when I have a chance.
