I have a store that wants to buy a few of my images for printing 2.5' x 8' for wall decor in their own store. They want the digital files only and will do their own printing. I was flattered to be approached but now haven't the slightest idea as to their value.

I am in no shape or form a professional photographer. Just a serious amateur I guess you might say... Can anyone provide any insights?

It depends on what you want. If you aspire to be a professional, I'd ask for nothing more than a credit and maybe some kind of cross-promotional opportunity. If you have no pro aspirations, that's another story. Do you have a relationship with the owner? Can you trust him to work with you on a number you mutually believe is fair? Personally, I'd give them away. Partly because money just isn't an issue for me, partly so that I can tell my friends, "See those pictures in X store? I shot those." That's pretty nice.

I'd be more impressed by my friend saying "See those pictures in X store? I shot those, and got paid $xxx.xx"

Money may not be the best option in that scenario, is it a store you visit often? Ask for a permanent employee's discount. :D

You can always ask them what their budget is and price and set your price accordingly. It might be more than you even thought about charging.

Depending on the size of the store and how upscale it is, I'd charge $100 -500. btjm

Just my opinion, but I would ask the "client" what their expectations are for the price, if the response is, "oh, I don't know how about $20 each or something" I would respectfully decline.

As far as I know bragging rights never paid a bill or allowed anyone to purchase food or gas or equipment. I mean even if the guy is your friend, your friend should help you out and pay you a reasonable amount for your work, right?

I would politely tell the store that you would like to be in charge of the printing of your images so that you can make sure the final images look as good as possible, and are mounted to a very high degree of standards (with UV protection etc.) and mark up the cost of the job by 50%, so if one print costs $300, add $150 to that and charge the client $450 per print (just an example, printing costs could be much higher).

That way the store won't use the images more than they are agreeing to and you can get paid a fair amount for your work and time.

I'd research it as though I were paying to have them printed myself and then add 30% minimum...

I'm not a fan of selling original files, but I've done it. I've sold prints to people, and I've sold the original files to people.

Those buying the original files pay a lot more than those buying prints...
