So I plan on selling my 70-300 in the near future for a sharper 200mm. Im tired of having to deal with either a soft lens or having to stop it down to f8 or even further.

The lenses I have really looked at so far are the
EF 70-200 f4L non-IS
EF 200mm f2.8L II
Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II (why does sigma have to have long names?)

Im not really worried about versitily at the moment so the prime is ok with me. Im willing to spend about $800 atm. My real question is which one is the sharpest. I would really like a 2.8 lens so unless the f4 is much sharper than the others I think I will go with a 2.8 lens. If there is a better option that I missed please point it out.

Thanks in advance,
Evan

A friend of mine has the 70-200 f/4 and I think that my 200mm 2.8 is a little sharper, but that's not scientific and the 70-200 is a great lens. All of those lenses are going to be sharper than the 70-300. In fact, I sold my 70-300 with IS just to get the 200mm 2.8L and I haven't regretted it. Next to my 50mm 1.4, the 200mm is my favorite lens.

If you want to use only at 200mm the 200 f2.8 is fine.

If you want a 70-200 consider if you want f4 or f2.8.

All three lenses are different, so get what you need.

BTW, the Sigma is called Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM II

They're all acceptably sharp. I'd buy on features.

If you don't mind a f/4 lens . I'd pair the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 with the 400mm 5.6 you have . They will make a great combo !

The 100-300 F4 isnt in the price range he wants.

You cant go wrong with any of them lenses, Now you just think of other things. Do you want the weight of the 2.8? is F4 fast enough? Are you comfortable with a teleprime?

Answer then 3 questions and you will have you next lens.

Personally id go for the 70-200 F4. Is good in almost any situation.

This is exactly what I have and I agree. I got my Sigma on e-bay for $550.

You got really lucky finding one that cheap. They are usually at least $200 more expensive than what you paid. Really great telephoto zoom from what I've read.

The 200mm f/2.8L II is a great lens. I have no doubt it will meet or exceed the 70-200 f/4L and sigma 70-200 f/2.8 at the 200mm focal length.

See this blog entry for comparisons of the 200 f/2.8 vs the two 70-200 f/2.8L IS revisions: http://www.ocabj.net/?p=791 (external link)
