ACK! Help? So it turns out I should probably buy a second battery before I leave (oh, btw, my 60D and I are gonna be traveling the upper midwest of the US for 10 months starting with Iowa on February 15), but I don't have time to wait for China to send me a third party battery off of eBay. Any fully compatible third party batteries that ship from the US? Or anybody willing to sell me theirs and buy another (I'd pay for shipping)?

I love a conundrum...

Did you get your battery situation sorted out? If not I could sell you my Delkin (and I'd buy 2 of something else).

To me the rubber grip looks and feels the same, I'll let you know if anything wears out, but I hope it doesn't! :)

I only had one battery in it and it worked fine, not sure if it matters which end of the tray you put it in. It also comes with a tray that holds 6 AA's which would come in nice if I didn't have time to charge a battery or were away from a power source... just going to have to start keeping spare batteries in my bag :)

I have 2 Phottix batteries on the way, probably going to put those together in the grip and leave the Canon battery for when I go without... not planning on leaving the grip on all the time, at least until I get a bigger bag.

Thanks for the info!

^ shoot manual with no auto iso?

Do you know where to turn it off while in Video mode? I'll admit I haven't played with the video mode much so I need to play some more, I just thought I'd post the question in case anyone else had the same issue and had a quick answer. The quality of the video is fantastic, but I don't understand why it has to be so choppy when adjusting, doesn't seem like a good default setting.

Well, not sure why it is choppy, but it sounds like it is adjusting the aperture during shooting. I shoot in manual mode so select your aperture and shutter and then use auto iso to control the lighting. If you still get stutter, then it probably has something to do with the auto-iso but I doubt it.

Here are some snaps from today.

Once you set your mode dial to video then to to Menu and there is a setting for exposure setting to manual and enable it. Your shutter should match your frame rate but not faster than your frame rate.

Don't use the shutter button to focus during recording but manual focus or pre focus first.

One more thing if you leave the IS on which is a great feature for video but it will drain the battery quite a bit more - according to the manual.

Topped off on the charger fairly quick, couple hours to get both charged... I'll have to run 'em down and charge a few times to see how they hold up, here's a quick pic with my ol' Rebel XT, lol...

This Meike Rig looks great! I'm gonna get one too... I'm used to using grip but do you think its not too heavy.

Can U please record a 5 minute long video then check the power level? My opteka went down to 87% when it was installed along with canon battery. (Canon stayed at 100%)
EDIT:: my 60d was attached to 70-200 F4 IS and IS was on.

I set a timer and recorded a 5 min. video, both batteries still at 100%. I had my 50mm 1.8 on there though, forgot to put an IS lens on. I'm sure the IS makes a difference, but I doubt it would run them down too much faster. I'm also using a 30mb/s card, not sure if that would help.

I honestly don't think it's noticeably heavy, but I haven't had a chance to carry it around attached for long. I'm only planning on using it gripped for portrait shoots and weddings, and I think the weight of the lens is what will get me then, lol. (70-200 2.8)

Thank you 3DZukini. Looks like this opteka is just another POS 3rd party battery. I'll give sterlingtek battery a shot. Thanks again.

Quick question for you guys here... I've been approached with a potential trade of my 60D for a good condition 1D MK II. I like the idea of basically having the battery grip built in for added heft and comfort, and the idea that this may track and focus quicker than my 60D for fast action shots, offer a better protection of weather sealing when attaching a weather sealed L series lens for harsher environments (i.e. beach, boating, sand, rain and in the presence of babies and/or toddlers and for some reason the overall IQ in the 1D thread seems to be a bit better than some similar shots here. I realize alot of this could be attributed to the fact the lens benefits the IQ more than the camera but I'm curious to know how much in comparing these two, if anyone has experience with both. Added to that, I would like to make the switch to full frame one day, within a year or two, and like the idea that this is one step closer to full frame being a 1.3 crop to take advantage of the few extra millimeters (approx. 7 mm) gained over the 60D. High ISO comparison also seems to be in favor of the 60D from what I've gathered but not by terribly much. I'm in no way saying my 60D isn't capable nor a great camera as I love it to pieces and has become my baby and I am picking up the 24-105 f4L just as soon as I pick up an overtime day to fund it so I want to know people's honest opinions if making the swap seems like a beneficial one given my wants, or if I would benefit any to keeping it as a back up for said proposed full frame purchase down the road in the form of 5D MK II or III by the time that comes around. The proposed offer would also include cash on his end to me, as I am also curious to anyone's input what I could expect to be a fair amount on his part. Like I said, I'm not sure that I'm ready to part with a near new 60D, but would like opinions as to whether it seems beneficial to future plans. Thanks in advance to anyone for any input or advice. I GREATLY appreciate it. :D

I'm hoping so. I ordered an Opteka, and only after I paid did I see that it was coming from China, too. I wanted a Sterlingtek, but with shipping it cost $30. Fingers crossed that the Opteka gets here no later than February 14. May as well have just saved the $2 and gone with the Phottix.

Thanks (to whoever mentioned it) for the tip on the Opteka. I'll be sure to test mine out whenever I get it to see how it fares. I'm not terribly concerned since it's going to be my back-up battery, anyway, but hopefully I'll remember/get the chance to do it.

Next up: microphone. I sooooo wish I could just buy a field recorder for audio (I am still a video person, after all, with decent audio experience), but even used ones on fleabay run at least $90, so I'll have to pray I can find a halfway decent used mic that will improve the sound at least a little bit. I've dealt with some pretty bad audio in the past that came out of post barely passable, so hopefully I'll be okay. At least I'm not planning on shooting anything that's supposed to come out at the semi-pro level my projects were expected to be during college.

Are you actually going to be pushing the boundaries to a point where you need the additional weathersealing? Really? Isn't it smarter to keep it dry to begin with?

It's great to know you have weathersealing, but I do a lot of kayaking, canoeing, mountaineering expeditions and...guess what? I've arrived at the conclusion I'm just as well off with a lighter, more disposable camera, given similar image quality. I've killed a lot of electronic devices in a lot of ways over the years. I've seen the marine environment eat "waterproof" cameras. It's part of the reason I bought the 60D. It's lighter, has a similar image quality to the 7D, and if I kill it, I'll feel less remorse. 99.9% of the potential incidents you can prepare for and avoid, and the other 1/1000 will eat your camera no matter what it is. Save the money and buy a Pelican case.

I don't believe in trading sideways. Like you, I would like to own full frame. I wouldn't see a 1D as a step towards that. I would rather be saving up for the 5D MarkIII (which I am) and buying it as soon as possible. Don't know the 1DMarkII, but I'm sure it's got a wicked fps rate. So if I was into sport photography, I would consider the trade. Otherwise, no.

Hi

I just joined the forum and like what I see so far :)

I have had several SLR cameras and have used the Canon S3 IS for a few years now. Great camera for what it is :)

I have been looking to buying a DSLR for a while and seriously considered the 7D when it was released. I have always been a fan of an articulated screen (though the screen on the S3 IS was small).

When the 60D came out I was convinced that this was to be my first DSLR. I read the reviews (most of them :) ). They were very persuasive in most reviews. So last week I purchased my very own 60D. I have the camera with the 60D battery grip and a 18-200mm ESF lens.

One of my first photos was a night shot of the park across the road from my house. Not knowing too much about the camera (purchased only 2 hours before) I was VERY impressed with the performance at ISO 3200!

Personally I would prefer to have the ability to turn the camera on and turn the mode dial WITHOUT having to press the lock button.

There are two points about the camera with which I am (a little) disappointed.

1. Mono recording on the camera body! Full 1080p HD with HDMI capabilities and MONO sound!

2. Something that has not been noted in any review I have read, there is NO WAY of knowing which mode the camera is using unless you look at the mode dial. This is inconvenient when working at night! There is no indication in the viewfinder, even the illuminated display on the top plate does not indicate the camera mode.

(maybe someone can tell me otherwise?)

Anyway, in other respects I am very pleased with the 60D and very glad I bought it.

Glad to be here and look forward to reading many other useful and informative tips etc.

kind regards

Peter

If you hit the info. button a few times it will cycle through displays on the LCD, one of them is a nice blown up version of the info from the top and viewfinder, in upper left corner it shows mode. When you're using the display like that you can push the Q button and use the arrows to move around the display and make changes depending on the mode you're in. I usually leave my LCD in this mode.
