I got my 60D back in November and have spent a lot of time playing around with it. Took it on my recent cruise to the Mexican Riviera and managed to get this shot of a dolphin that was swimming near the ship. Took it using a Canon 70-300IS USM lense. Below is the EXIF data. Thoughts on the picture? Was surprised to get it considering I was on a moving ship and the dolphin was swimming.

Camera Canon EOS 60D
Exposure 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture f/6.3
Focal Length 225 mm
ISO Speed 200
Exposure Bias 0 EV

QUOTED IMAGE

Nice shot! Those dolphins have always amazed me how they like to swim near, and jump near ships.

Here are a few more. Not quit as good. These ones were from earlier when we were not expecting the dolphins. Had enough time to change the lens and start shooting, but think I left it in Auto mode since my wife was using the camera earlier. I think they may have turned out better if I had shot them in shutter priority. I was very impressed at the 60D ability to shoot so quickly and get some really decent shots.

Most of us don't get a chance at this shot in a lifetime. Love the playfullness of Dolphins. I have this lens - its great you had the aperture at f/6.3 and it turned out pretty well for 1/400th. You likely had that speed because it was a good walk-around... but who expects a dolphin to jump out of the water beside you?! Glad you got the shot - did you sharpen at all in PP?

Edit: Ok, I see variable shutter speeds & apertures on your pics

I missed a great opportunity the other day.

I was trying to shoot the (full)moon rise.
Didn't get a good shot due to the trees - but around that time two planes flew across the moon within 10 minutes of each other . . . and I missed the shot on both occasions.

The only editing I did on one of the pictures was to crop it. The dolphin ended up off center (go figure since we were all moving). I did not sharpening it or anything (at least not yet) I have a few others of some whales jumping out of the water about 1000M away that I am trying to work on making a little better in PP.

1) What would be the point of stereo mikes on the body? The two tracks would be identical.

2) Use my camera in the dark a bit. When having problems seeing things, I usually use the quick button on the back, and can tell right away what mode I'm in. I also sometimes use the illumination button and the top panel,

I may owe you an apology... I have to admit that I don't know much about this issue. I was under the impression that a set of off-camera mics might be able to capture stereo sound, but I can find nowhere in the manual (which in typical Canon style is as clear as mud) where it says it can be done. Is this a feature that other DSLR cameras with HD are offering? How is the need for two discrete sound recording locations handled by other cameras?

Yes, what indeed ~

Congrats on your new acquisition!

Ignore the negative threads - there seems to be a bottomless pit of ignorance in some corners of this forum

If only they would have made the 24-70 L out of the 60D plastic, huh? ;)

Ok ok I confess. Its just to intimidate rebel owners and their kit lenses when I pull out my gripped 7d with the 70-200 f2.8 IS mkII with the 60d griped and rockin the 24-70L hanging on my side.... LOL

just posted this in another thread - I just got the 7D replacing my 60D and I have to say that the 60D just fits better in the hand. I have average size hands and (for me) where my palm rests on the 7D just doesn't feel right. The 60D on the other hand just fits perfectly
