A few shots with my 60d and my new Tamron 70-300vc

Is that the one that just came out? I was talking to the Tamron rep at our camera store and he said it was a great lens... but, of course, he said all of the Tamron lenses were great :) Now I'm a little torn... I can get this lens for $399 with rebate, but I was saving for the 70-200 2.8, which costs twice as much. This new hobby is going to kill me!

I think it's better to save for what you really want than to settle.

On a side note: So far from what I have seen of the 70-300VC I think the 55-250IS used for $200 or less is the better deal.

It was so overcast where I was shooting after work today that ISO6400 just wasn't cutting it so I had some fun with ISO 12800, in this case shooting 1/800th, f/8 @ 300mm

anyone know how to retain Exif info when exporting in Lr3?

Nice high iso shot. I'm already considering the 60D.

Thanks rjx, I may have to stop by my local shops and try out a few different lenses to get a better idea what I want... I'll definitely check out the 55-250IS, the price sounds a lot nicer :)

Thanks for the comments.

Just to confirm, "105 equates to EF-S 168mm" will this extra zoom be noticable over the 85 end on the 15-85? and does that mean 85x 1.6 is 136? or is it actually 85mm compared to 168mm on the 24-105?

I will still have my 18-55 lens so if I need the wide angle end I can just swap lenses if needed. Thoughts?

PS I am not concernced about full frames. I have a 60D with no intention in the next 3 yrs (at least) to upgrade

If you're just going to use the lens on the 60D then ignore the full frame conversions and the crop factor. 105mm will bring things a bit closer than 85mm. (105/85 = 1.24, so things will be 24% larger in the image (in one dimension, not area))

If you're keeping the 18-55mm then a "traditional" telephoto partner to it is the 55-250IS. This lens is small, light and great value and similar quality to the 18-55IS.

The 15-85mm is a step up in quality and basically would replace the 18-55. It does all the same things but better, wider and longer... at the cost of being more expensive, bigger and heavier.

I have no experience of the 24-105 except for reading everywhere that it makes most sense from full frame cameras in terms of focal length.

So I think you need to decide whether it's focal length or quality you're after...

Thanks MintMark.

What do you mean "24% larger in the image (in one dimension, not area)" What is "in one dimension"?

I am hoping to get a "One" Lens solutions rather than carrying an 18-55 and a 55-250. I am hoping that the 24-105 will be a good enough zoom with being just enough wide angle for the images I take.

I will mainly be aiming my shots at wildlife/nature/flowers along with product shots and portrait/model work.

Sorry, I was trying to be clear but then I wanted to be precise as well. It means that an object will be 24% wider and 24% higher in the image at 105mm compared to 85mm.

There are super zoom lenses, like 18-200, for a one lens solution. I've never had one but the reviews all suggest that there is a compromise somewhere... maybe that's the answer though since you seem to have a wide variety of uses.

I'm no expert though...

Nice high iso shot. I'm already considering the 60D.

Thank-you!

It was actually a lot of fun. I'm accustomed to shooting ISO 3200-6400 with high SS but the dark late afternoon skies - and me being so freaking tired of only having overcast skies to shoot in for the last 3 wks (when its not raining) made me figure - what the heck - lets see what ISO 12800 can do - I'm not entering them into competitions or anything.

Anyways - I enjoyed the challenge of trying to get good shots
