Took a few more shots today, that screen is really coming in handy for weird angle shots.

Here is a 1042 second shot I did tonight, my first time trying to do longer star trails.

This one I used my 18-55is and a IR72 filter to get this false color IR picture

another shot with my new Tamron 70-300vc, I have never shot birds before, but this could be fun.

one more bird shot, I like the way he was holding on to both branches. LOL

Hi all.. this is my first post on POTN :) I'll be hanging out here alot, great forum!

I've had my 60D a week now and I really love it. I'm finding it much easier to handle than my former 50D, mostly due to the slight decrease in weight and size. The grip is a joy to hold and feel very comfy.

I'll try to post a shot taken last week at a Open Mic night, my first outing with the 60D and using the 430EX II - the venue these are shot in is very dimly lit, with lots of external light coming in from the windows behind the performers. I must say I was quite pleased with myself as far as my exposures go. The actual compositions could be more interesting, but I've got lots of time to learn that ie forever :)

Love the IR ! - shots always look so surreal and ... Fairylandish...

I saw the below pick in the kung-Fu movie "Crouching Spiders, Hidden Sparrows" I think... :D

Love your experimentation - its inspiring! Have to get an IR filter one day...

A Hearty welcome to POTN forum Amanda! (and New 60D owners!)
You have some very nice glass to work with and a great flash too. I bought my 430 at the same time as my 50D & 15-85mm but ended up selling because I didn't use it as much as I thought I would. Now I see the high ISO does very well on our new 60D so all is well.

Enjoy the forum & this thread and lets see more of your shots

Ordered one yesterday, should be here Monday. We'll see how it turns out. I'm a current 50D owner/enthusiast, I hope I'm pleased.

I don't know what types of shooting you do, but I do a lot of low light action wildlife which puts lots of demand on the 50D's AI Servo & ISO performance - and it often did the job.

When I got the 60D (50D now f/s) I flipped her into Auto ISO and got lazy compared to doing everything Manual on the 50D - but Auto ISO (up to 6400, unlike 3200 on the 7D) had a tendency to underexpose in low light when its using 3200-6400.

BUT - when I got out of my lazy-boy chair and shot manual ISO again (including expansion to 12800) - my shots were equal or better to what I was getting with the 50D. Certainly the ISO2000-12800 range is cleaner (and washes up nicely in Lr3 anyways).

I got the 60D because the 50D was just a little too big for my hands and saw the 60D was a little smaller - and its now ergonimically great for me. I also wanted the slightly higher resolution and better metering (3 more mp & now 63 zone metering, respectfully).

I'd used the flippy screen on my previous SX10 which was nice for odd angles, etc, Its nice to have it upgraded to a 3" high rez now.

I just got back from a nature walk and will post pics once I'm back home but I'm very happy with it.

When I upgraded from my XSi to the 50D - you could not take the smile off my face for a few days - it was a night & day upgrade. But 50D to 60D, IMO, is a more subtle change that did not produce any Wow's for me, although the higher ISOs are nice to work with...

Had I the money and got a 7D or 1D - sure, there would have been some spontanious "Wow's" heard within earshot... ;)

You have purchased the 60D so you are willing to do without the MA, magnesium body, and 1 second slower burst - so I dont think you will be dissapointed - its essentially the 50D, refreshed.

Good luck & post your pics!

Canon 60d size : 5.7 x 4.2 x 3.1 in.
Canon 50d size: 5.7 x 4.2 x 2.9 in

These are direct from Canon website. 60d is larger

Am I wrong?

Low light is my main concern as well as pixel count. I do a lot of low light nature stuff too. Major cropping is almost always an issue. Never use high burst rate, besides, almost the same. And I tested all my lens's when I first got the 50d, none need MA.

Its very similar if you regard the largest dimensions, but look at photos of the 50D & 60D side by side, paying attention to the height of the grip, specifically - the 60D is not as tall in the grip - or as tall generally - and the grip is a deeper ergonomic which many find more comfortable. I don't have to strain my kung-fu death grip as much now...

Using finer units of measure, millimeters, the dimmensions are:
50D: 146 x 108 x 74 mm
60D: 145 x 106 x 79 mm

also - on the back - similar to the 7D layout - I find the controls are easier access to my right thumb, vs the 50D where it was a bit of a cumbersome stretch for me...

yeah, ditto! My 300mm just isn't long enough too often, so the 3 mp more plus cleaner ISO is what I wanted.

How do you take a 1042 second shot when the shutter speed max is 30? very interested :D
