I was using my 60D to try to take some shots of water drops...I was in M mode with shutter speeds around 1/1000...50mm 1.8...with the exposure reading telling me it was all ok....but the results were water that was frozen sure, but blurry...I never really got any perfectly round drops...my focus was ok.

So what am I doing wrong? Not enough light I think...maybe the camera is metering off something other than the drops...it needs enough to light to freeze the drops, regardless that the exposure meter indicates the exposure is in the middle/ ok.

Am I right?

I wasn't using a flash at all...just some household lamps

This bloke was using 1/250...to match the flash speed with his camera....I tried 1/250...but I got just blurry water

Just looking back again at my images, it seems that my focus is pretty bad...I wasn't in close enough. I was using my cheap 50mm lens I think

Anyway, these are my first attempt as a novice...I had poor lighting/ no flash...and I just noticed that my exposure was 1/160 @ 1.8 with an iso of 6400

Here's a better image....just so I don't give the 60D a bad name with my drop shots

Looks out of focus everywhere..looks to me more like camera shake. Try it with a tripod and a remote shutter release. Then try and practice hand hold.

This might be a silly question, but did you use a tripod? If this was handheld, that would explain it all. Were you in an AF mode, or manual focus? It might pay to find your focal point using spot focus and then go manual. One time I banged one of my lenses, and it never focused right again. If it is the lens, don't be afraid to get rid of it.

Yeah memory junction, I had a tripod.

Loukango, that's the same water drop video I saw and linked in my earlier post.

I think my trouble was:

1. 1/160 shutter
2. Poor light
3. Poor focus & very narrow dof
4. Perhaps wrong lens for the job (50mm 1.8 II) - although I suppose I could have got as close as the 50mm would have allowed me and then cropped to make a nicer image
5. Poor light...I only had a desktop lamp. I didn't use flashes.
