Tips on metering... If I use one of the 9 focus squares as the point of my focus....then that is also the point of my metering right?...

The autofocus points are not identical to the light metering mode. Per page 119 of the Canon 60D manual there are four metering modes. The "Spot mode" come closest with it covering a bit more than the center focus point.
The focus point(s) and the metering mode are selected independently. For example, you can set the camera to use only the leftmost (9 o'clock) focus point and yet use the "Spot" mode for light metering which is centered around the center autofocus point.
p.s. There is a concurrent thread regarding exactly what part of the image is used for a given autofocus box in the image. It seems the area of the image used for a given autofocus point may extend slightly beyond the displayed box. The center box may be an exception. This thread starts HERE.
