Picked up my 60D on Friday and been toying with it ever since. Right now I only have the nifty fifty for testing as I'm still waiting for the 28-135 to arrive. Here's the first test shot I'm willing to share. It's been a while since I've done an HDR shot but this really seemed to make the image much more vibrant than the original.

Sorry for the long post, I'm trying to improve my portrait skills so any C&C is appreciated.

For my wife's 37th birthday, we went to Victoria & Albert's in the Grand Floridian hotel near the Magic Kingdom, Disney World. So, while she was dressed up and made up, I took the opportunity to practice my portrait and glamour-style shooting. I didn't want to drag around any real lighting modifiers, so I just had the Speedlite. The first two are with the Sigma 17-70 OS Macro, the rest are with the Canon 50mm 1.4.

The skin tones are actually pretty accurate. She's got extremely pale, fair skin. Objectively, it looks washed out, but she hasn't been feeling well this week so she's more pale than usual.

Two before dinner, at the entrance to the hotel. Mostly afternoon sun, had the Speedlite off to the side to fill in, especially her eyes. Post-processing is very minimal except for some slight exposure tweaks, and I spot-removed a bug bite off her shoulder.

These two are inside at dinner. I didn't want to use the flash. #3 is ISO3200, #4 is a long exposure with the camera sitting on the table. In retrospect I should have used a somewhat smaller aperture on #4. Significant WB corrections on both, otherwise not much processing.

Two more outside after dinner.

#5 is next to a fountain, I had set the Speedlite on the edge of the fountain to bounce off the fountain bowl (camera right), and used to pop-up flash for a bit of fill. I think I had cranked the pop-up down to 1/64 power... just experimenting with different flash power and ratios. Not too much post: Just desaturated a bit, decreased contrast for most of the photos, used an adjustment brush to increase contrast again around the eyes.

#6, she can't resist a hammock on the beach, even at ten o'clock at night. The flash is sitting in her shoe pointed up at the back of her head. Processing is the Color CP2 preset in Lightroom.

Nearing the end of dinner, the gentleman at the table next to us proposed to his lady friend. They were taking photos with a disposable and an iPhone, so I offered to snap a few and e-mail them. I wish I had taken a half step backwards for this one, and framed it slightly better. My focus isn't quite right either. I was rushing and it shows in the results.

Well, after going back and forth...do I buy the 50D v 60D...refurb or new...buy now or wait...

I ordered my 60D kit today! Now all I have to do is sit by my door until the UPS guy comes later this week!!

Now should I order the 50mm to go along with my toy?! Decisions, decisions. :D

Here are a couple shots taken today in Blue Mtn. Lake, Adirondack Mtn's NY. Our Spring motorcycle Ride. It clouded up before these could be taken. We had fun, but it got a bit chilly on the way home!:D

C&C:

Fill flash is supposed to soften harsh shadows. Instead it is being used here to create them. You seem, instead, to be trying to use the flash as a kicker, to create bright highlights.

Some basic observations:

1) The closer a fill light is to the axis of the photo, the better. This is why glam photographers love ring lights. Why even take it off the camera? If you are taking the flash off the camera and placing it in strange places, then it is not fill you are trying to achieve. It becomes a key light or a kicker.

2) For natural lighting, you wnat one dominant light source. In your pictures there are several. It confuses the eye a bit.

3) We are accustomed to light sources coming from above. Shadows appear below noses, etc. In several of these pictures, the flash is placed below the axis of the camera. It creates ghoulish shadows.

4) Try backing off the exposure of your flash a bit. It is overpowering ambient light, and if your intent is fill then it needs to be a couple stops darker.

There's some great portrait primers on the Internet, and even some videos on YouTube (although I've also seen some dross). Keep it up, and you'll get there!
