Used mine the past few nights for shooting dance and it's performance surprised me quite a bit! Definitely a keeper for me and I say another great camera from Canon. I'll have some highISO samples to share in the next few days.

We all still know what panning is, I guess. Do you remember truck right or left, dolly in or out? ..........

Oh yes, I remember hearing those commands through my headset........Now that was a flash from the past. I also remember being able to zoom in/out so slowly that the person watching it could hardly tell it was happening.

To get back to the 60D, what I'm really looking forward to is being able to improve my still image skills with the camera. For me one of the best things about the camera, or any DSLR for that matter, is I can check the picture right away instead of having to wait for the film to be processed.

Being able to shoot video is a bonus and will allow me to add some video to the still images I take without having to bring along my video camera.

Jon...

That's right. I remember the slow move in, as well. Looks good as long as you don't kick the dolly base.

I understand the principles of film-making, I'm not sure I have the patience (or editing skills) to make another hobby of it. My Nero 9 has some built-in software for movie-making, but it sure ain't intuitive for me. I have to find an online tutorial and keep it open on one part of the screen while I perform the edit on another.

If the 60D is your first DSLR with video, you are starting with one of the easiest versions. I have a 5D2 and a 7D. I first got a T2i, thinking it would be an ideal camera to take on a trip to India this Jan. But the 60D looked as it would fit the bill better, so the T2i gets a set of the basic 18-55 and 55-250 lenses and wrapped as a Xmas gift to older daughter (maybe she 'll shoot the grandsons more). Now, I'm stressing the 60D as much as possible to make sure I have a good grasp of it's abilities before I go to India.

You can shoot a still in video mode but it sure seems to take a while.

Since most of you have experience with the 60D....I have a question. How is it for taking sports pics...mainly outdoors?

I have an XSi right now and dissapointed with the speed of focusing (especially when the kids are running toward me). I have a couple of good lenses but I find it tough to get many keepers when taking casual sports pics (sons soccer etc). Does the 60D offer a superior focus system? Anyone upgraded from the XSi to the 60D? How does it compare?

Cheers.

There are three of us going. We were all Peace Corps Volunteers back in the mid-1960s stationed in Punjab.
Of course we plan a nostalgic journey to the places where we worked and lived, but also some tourist spots. Two of us have only seen the Taj from a train window, so that's one place. I wanted to visit Bodh Gaya and Varanasi and they wanted to see Khujaraho, so we will probably get that far east.

I plan to be back to Delhi by 26 Jan for the Republic Day parade and we were going to go to one of the national parks to close out the trip, either Jim Corbett or Rathambhore. Our return is slated for 8 Feb.

I have a feeling this will not be my last trip, however. I'll send you a email through the forum and you can do the same for me.

Thanks.

Greets Newby2Cam,
The XSi was my first dslr - excellent camera but the Rebel series will only go so far with action shots, despite having good lenses which I see you do.

I got the 50D to up my game and I was frustrated with what the XSi could not do with wildlife action shots - not enough keepers.

While I'm thinking of it - before you discount the XSi's AF performance - have you shot with a smaller aperture like f/5.6-f/8 to get more of your subject in focus? Just throwing that out there...

So I got the 50D specifically for the higher frame rate and better AF system over the XSi, higher resolution, etc. I was Very Happy with what the 50D could deliver even with my modest 70-300mm IS.

Yet the 50D's high ISO was mediocre and when I saw the 60D's specs announced - and encouraged by the reviews of both the 7D and 550D T2i - I knew the 60D had to be "As Good" as the 50D and quite similar to the 7D in many regards.

Once I saw the AF system was similar or better - and the resolution was higher - and the ISO performance was Very Good (akin the 7D & 550D) - plus the flippy screen, improved 63-zone evaluative metering, slightly smaller grip vs 50D, electronic level all as perks - I figured I'd get the 60D before any real pro reviews had been published. Part of my thinking was - Canon will not want another ISO debacle as it did with the 50D - so its got to be good!

Reviewers have stated that there is very little edge over the 50D in resolution despite the 3 mp advantage - which was not a big deal and no surprise since they said the same thing about the 50D over the 40D - which was a 5mp jump. However - The 60D's 18mp vs your XSi's 12mp - is indeed significant...

All in all - I am pleased I made the upgrade to the 60D - and certainly if you look on paper - its an upgrade. Some will say, like disgruntled 50D owners and those with higher bodies - that it is a "slidegrade", while others - there is just no pleasing them and they have dug in there heels and determined not to give the 60D even an inch (when in fact, whether they admit it or not - its Canon they are pissed with - not the 60D, and I cannot be swayed from that view - because unlike the 50D when it came out - it too was not only a mini-upgrade vs the marvelous 40D - but it had distinct ISO troubles - which translates into image quality faults). Canon goofed calling the 60D - the 60D - but that is a different discussion. Truth is: there is nothing faulty about the 60D - it has great image quality and is a great performer. Not having a magnesium skeleton, or microadjust, or a blazingly super-sonic 6.3 fps (50D) vs the tortoise-like, slothesque measly 5.3 fps of the 60D - do not constitute poor image quality or faults.

Do I wish there was exposure compensation in Manual Mode? yes. Do I hope for continuous auto-focus being added to movie-mode? Yes, but nevertheless its a great camera and will it give you a higher keeper rate of your kids playing soccer? Oh yes. 9 cross-type AF points and improved metering will give it to you.

I was very happy with the 50D upgrade over the XSi - which is no slouch in its own right - and the 60D is a 'pleasant' upgrade, albeit in some respects subtle - some not so subtle - over the 50D.

wish I had your glass to go with my 60D. cheers!

Another nice shot! Wish my hummer shots could be taken with ISO 400 - instead of ISO 3200-12,800.

The 60D is mysteriously absent from your sig... don't be too embarrassed of it
;);)
