I have heard that 2mm on the wide end is a big difference whilst 2mm on the telephoto end is only a small difference.

I've always wondered what the relationship was so I plotted it.

Does the graph represent APS-C and affect of FL for that format? It would be good to label that graph, so there is no question.

Sorry, for APS-C, FL is not 35mm equiv (i.e. it IS the number that is printed on the lens)

The trend would be the same on full frame sensor anyway, just shifted 1.6x to the right of screen

I should also say my source is LINK (external link)

Instead of FOV put in: Money in Bank
And instead of Focal length, use: Time being a photographer

Same Curve.......pure coincidence? I THINK NOT

Yeah, I'm in Lausanne and went FNAC yesterday because a guy I work with needed some headphones. They wanted 180- for the nifty fifty and that ratio continued up the line. Crazy...

On a positive note, Ehawk is super reasonable if you need stuff.

I usually go with toppreise.ch, its around the same price or cheaper than buying from B&H and importing, but new stuff is still a good 30% more expensive compared to the US or so

I got my 7D from ehawk (through toppreise) for 1600- new here and it came with 250- off my next canon purchase so it depends. The cheapest I found it in the US at the same time was 1530 USD.

True. I found a 35L on ricardo for 1300 yesterday though.

Sorry to the OP. Great post and sorry we thread jacked it.

Aye :o
back on topic.

I always knew that wider lenses had more FOC per mm but its crazy to see the graph, pretty much an exponential curve.

The graph needs a lot of labelling improvement. First of all, the Y axis is not "field" of view, but "angle" of view and should have "degrees" listed for the numeric value. Secondly, the format of the camera involved must be documented.

Because the diagonal angle of view is a fairly useless value for most folks, if that could be converted to horizontal angle of view then the results would be a lot more useful for most folks. Obviously, the curve would not be different, but the numbers would be much more useful.

I don't think the labels matter at all, or diagonal vs horizontal. If you move from 10 to 20 the FOV, angle of view, diagonal angle of view, horizontal FOV, whatever you want to call it, all would double. Just like moving from 100-200. It is the ratio of the numbers that makes the curve, not the actual measurements. Doesn't really matter what you measure, you still can see that if you move from 30 to 60 you are going to get half the view - on crop, FF, 1.6x. polariod, APS-H, 4/3, whatever.

Now if each line on the graph was for double the focal length, so 10-20-40-80-160-320 - etc, then it would be a nice straight line rather than a curve
