or more politely :) ... You could use a light meter and be far more accurate when shooting

I wasn't trying to offend - I was just flabbergasted that anyone would use strobes without a light meter. Must be one of the new breed of photographers who reckon that you don't need one in the digital age! :p (OK, that was a dig! :)).

If your arms are long enough, you can do this...

Place the DO facing up toward the ceiling, like a bowl. Reach down into the modifier and push against two opposing rods using the heel of your palms. While you are pushing the rods apart, use your thumb and forefinger to pull out the spring loaded latches then release the tension on the rods to allow them to collapse. Move around the modifier doing two rods at a time until they are all collapsed. Setting it up is basically the same procedure, but in reverse.

If your arms are too short to do the above, I believe the preferred method is to buy the smaller 70cm Deep Octa. :)

I'm a short asian with arms like a T-rex and don't have a problem with the DO. I can't do opposing rods though. One at a time for me.

That should fit in the RB4001:

The RB4001's grid holder is approx. 6-5/8" in diameter. The photo shows a Speedotron 10-degree 7" grid in the holder.

Thanks Sheldon, Turns out my arms are long enough, took me like not-even-30-seconds to fold it up, and then maybe 30 seconds to assemble it again !!

Not quite as fast as a regular umbrella, but not too far off either !!

Do you guys normally leave them "assembled & folded" in their storage case whenever not in use ? That is, now it's assembled would I ever disassemble it again ?

Did notice that the case is the exact correct length that it needs to be, a couple of extra inches length would of been nice*.

Cheers,

* EDIT: FOR THE CASE !!!

I just want to take nice photographs of people.

Yup, assemble it once, never take the rods out again, just keep it folded up and in the case. :)

It's easier to get the modifier in the case if you go speedring first. The fit is just right that way!

Cheers,

EVERYONE who owns the 39" DO has said the same thing at one time or another.

So I just tried an experiment that combined several new items of mine. I just got the 70cm DO, and I recently picked up the Kacey Elinchrom adapter for the speedlight bracket. For this experiment, I used my 580EX flash in the 70cm DO. I used the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 and flash in ETTL mode (hence the underexposure since I didn't do any other adjustments to the image). I also used the Colorchecker and used the profile I created from this single light source in ACR to adjust the raw colors. Oh, and I used the DO with both inner and outer diffusers. Even so, I found the light to be rather beauty-dish like with the light falloff. This is one of my test shots:

Ah, OK. I thought they might be 7" (effective), 3" (actual) to conform to AlienBee marketing/labelling standards.

AB 7" grids are a perfect fit in Elinchrom 7" reflectors.

I also wanted to mention the sensational landscape photography found in your Flickr stream. You deserve a 24mm f/1.4L II and will certainly put it to *very* good use.

Dave F.

I concur. I can't believe I missed his pics and the fact that he lives where I lived a few years ago. I love your work Sheldon, very inspiring.
