Speaking of gels, what do you guys do if you want to use them on the BD? Just tape a big ass sheet over the satellite dish?

I've tried taping a smaller piece over the deflector but 24x24cm is not nearly enough. If it has to be larger than this, I can just as well tape it over the front which I usually do.

You do have to be careful when you tape or velcro a gel sheet over the front and fold the corners over.

Despite the round shape of the beauty dish, the squared off gel will actually alter the catch light and make it appear almost square and takes on an odd appearance.

I stopped doing that and for now haven't really come up with another way to gel the dish but considering that most of us use a beauty dish at close range, you may not like what you see with the gel over the front.

While we're on the subject, does anyone have a photo of the Gel Jawz being used in a softbox? Do you use this same method when using a deflector? Are 12"x12" gels large enough?

Why does it do that? I always pull the gel sheet tight and the whole area out of the beauty dish itself is not illuminated at all. There's no light leak and I never noticed any unwanted alterations to the light.

I can see your point if there's a gap between the metal reflector and the gel. In this case, things might be different, but that shall be avoided anyway.

Hi Tobi,

I was doing that with a 16" dish. The gel sheet was 20" square. I had velcro on the outside of the dish and tabs in the corners of the gel. I pulled it as tight as I could so it was right against the lip of the dish and when I looked at the catch lights I could see the gel was transmitting light straight forward as well as reaching the edges of the gel sheet.

I think I have an image to post but if not I'll shoot one later and post it.

Hey, are you dissing my "no-longer-made-by-Elinchrom-but-as-a-result-awesomely-rare-and-expensive" square gridded reflector?

Huh?

Punk.

I didn't think of the edges. Of course the gel itself will transmit a little bit of the light sideways and this will bleed out of the edges, if the gel itself is not very dense. I've used -2EV ND gels and these didn't show anything like that. Of course they're very dense, almost black; something like 1/2 CTO might be different.

Exactly. I should have mentioned that I was using a 1/8 CTO and not an ND gel.

Nah, nothing that's any real use. I do want to shoot properly with it soon, though, to see how it goes.

Noooo, I would never do that Mic. I actually like Elinchrom square reflector with grid.

What I'm describing (I'll show it later) is very unusual because you see the round dish being lit up but then there is a square with outside the edge of the dish.

Rob is the light merely following the corners of the gel sheet which are wrapped around the dish ?

if you made a square cardboard gel holder and cut out a perfect circle i doubt you would see what your describing
