Concept testing for a possible Christmas photo idea. In previous years I've tried to shoot strobe against ambient indoor light (fireplace, Christmas tree, etc) to get a shallow depth of field "glowing tree" shot. Always a PITA since studio strobes can't really get down that low in power. Used speedlights, double diffused through umbrellas/scrims etc. Too much setup work and hard to get a soft but well defined light with a scrim.

Thought I'd try the 74" Octa, but with the Pocket Wizard MiniTT1/FlexTT5 on a 580EX II so I could just use autoexposure. Used a mess of ball bungees to get it to stay put.

There's potential there I think! Need to gel the flash warmer, maybe balance a little more ambient in, and get my daughter a haircut. :)

Shot at f/1.8 and ISO 800 with the 24L. I think I dialed in -1/3 EC and + 1 FEC.

Cool beans, Sheldon!

This isn't the former occupant of the 600mm f/4L IS lens case is it? If it is, I can see why you had to sell the lens. I hope she has a real bed now. Lens cases tend to be lumpy.

Oh my, yes. I'm totally in love with it and still plan on expanding my collection of Chimera lightboxes.

The Quick Release speed ring with the short rods make the large softbox an absolute dream to setup and use.

Nope, this is her big sister. :-) The former occupant of the lens case is about 7 months old now.

I do have to admit, I was all proud of my ball bungee implementation until I popped over to the PLM thread where you have a perfectly mounted Canon strobe with pocketwizard and power cable, all neatly firing into an indirect PLM.

Your custom setups are amazing!

Looks like it worked pretty well, Sheldon.

Thanks, Sheldon, but a sizable percentage of my custom setups never see the light of day. The PLM+AC7 happens to be one that works very well:

The 51" and 64" PLMs make the most sense, I think, though I have tested with the 86" and that works as well.

And you should be proud of your "out of the box" thinking with the big indirect octa. It does what you needed it to do in the way you needed it to do it. Replace the ball bungees with a Kacey bracket and Elinchrom mount adapter and you'll really be in business.

I'm no expert, but isn't an ad supposed to make it look like the product helps you take reasonably well-lit shots?

 That was my first thought when looking at their advertising images. I've seen plenty of excellent work done with PCB stuff but never in their marketing.

Anyone surprised? Maybe CS will fix it, they're stellar.

Dave did you see the festivus link i posted?

Do you mean the link to the KTLA story about the inmate who declared Festivus as his religious holiday and scored kosher meals? Actually I hadn't seen that link until just now. He should have his sentence reduced for pure chutzpah.

I learned something. I never knew the origin of "Festivus". Like the judge in the story, I was NOT a Seinfeld fan. UGH!

Are you going to get the standard or the shallow? I have to say, the shallow is amazingly even and the light is gorgeous.
