some nice gear you picked up :)

Rob there is a sandbag provided with the boom that hangs off the back

I own the D600 and mine did not come with a sandbag. The boom has the hook at the back end for a sandbag but the bag was not included.

The description also makes no mention about it being included.

That's great, Tyler. You're probably going to want a counterweight or sandbag of some kind for the boom.

ya i have some sandbags (18lb/27lb), thanks. how much weight does it take? this will be my first boom actually.

Hi Dave,

Like most people, I started retouching by using skin softening techniques. I learned about 5 or 6 and found that I didn't like them. I used them because I didn't know any other techniques but the more I looked at the effect of smoothing the more I hated it.

Now, about 95% of the skin work I do is Dodge and Burn and never do skin smoothing with the exception of a very low opacity layer created with the Portraiture plugin that I use on occasion.

Thanks Rob, I've never cared much for it either, but I see a lot of heavily smoothed images from talented portrait guys, that is why I asked. It's not my style, and I'm hoping to avoid it.

I use dodge and burn often, by painting with a low opacity brush on a 50% gray layer set to overlay. I don't usually do much skin work though, mainly because I am not very skilled at it.

I could use some feedback please.
Both of these have a Kacey 22 BD as fill on camera axis. The key is a gridded 27" Rotalux.
The left shot is key direct on the face. The right shot is key moved 30 degrees to the left of direct.
Do either, neither or both work?
I tried working with a silver reflector to bring up the neck shadow in the shot on the left, but couldn't get rid of some of the shadow directly under the chin.
That's when I decided to rotate the light further subject right.
Thanks

Rob, how'd you get that shadow taken care of so well under the chin with the main up so high? Did you use a reflector that aimed at that area?

Ralph, depending on the look you're after, either is good but if I had to choose one, I'd go with the right one only because the shadow areas are more filled in than the other one.

When you said that you moved the key to the left of direct, you really meant right of direct, correct, since you later said "subject left"?

don't worry it makes us better photographers because we know we can't fix anything later

As soon as I press the shutter, it might as well just replace the sensor with stone because it is set

yeah I tried that for getting rid of double chins. I am cloning a lot right now for blemishes (sorry not really a tip but I am trying to add to the conversation :( )

I like the face and BG on the right.

I like the hair on the left

I have a question about the Elinchrom 53" octabox. Is there any available grids for this softbox?
