Never used G series but my moms PowerShot SXsomething in manual mode tries to replicate what the shot will look like. Sort of "what you see is what you get".

That's what the G12 does as well. Actually, I think this behaviour makes sense. When the internal flash is switched on or anything is placed in the hot shoe, the Display goes to the default mode and doesn't adjust brightness to ambient anymore. So far, everything is great -- except that when the trigger is depressed half way and the camera confirms focus, it goes back to WYSIWYG-mode. Totally stupid and probably a bug.

I just ordered a G11 instead, which is supposed to not have this weird bug.

Dunno, never really liked P&S :/ just feel they are difficult to use. Girlfriends dad has Panasonic GF1 which looks like really great small camera. :)

I wanted something for macro and model railroads. For this, there are certain benefits to having a P&S with a small sensor as opposed to my large sensor DSLR. The G11 will hopefully be a nice everyday camera as well.

It's kinda weird to use an SLR to 'take notes' when shopping for new furniture...

Good to know. So it definitely does not dimm the display after acuiring focus? Well, I'll see for myself in a few days anyway.

Is possible to use THIS (external link) back-up UPS for powering elinchrom D-Lite-It 4 400Ws? And if it does, for how many flashes?

I had a very different kind of shoot this weekend.

53" Octa with white translucent deflector and both layers of diffusion.

Here's the pic.

Very nice Robert. Shooting older people I figure for me it would be this configuration of the 53 or 72" indirect with both layers of diffusion.

How far from and to the right of the subjects was the 53?

Thanks man. Yes, shooting older people is very different. Really makes you think more about your lighting.

I was going to bring the 69" Octa but this was done is a very small home and it was cramped beyond belief. I only had an area that was 8' x 7' and I had to have a background set up as well.

This was a real exercise in lighting and problem solving. I really didn't have a convenient way to have a second powered light source or reflector so I had to do it with one light but at the same time I had to have the subjects within a foot of the background and didn't want shadows cast.

My light source was coming from just above and to the left of camera position so I set the background up parallel to the wall is was against and had the subjects angled so that the woman was further away from the background than the man. The extra distance was just enough for the falloff to diminish the shadow so that it was very soft and unobtrusive.

Man, if you wouldn't have mention it I wouldn't have thought about how close the background is. There is only a tiny hint of shadow behind her.

Problem solving is one of the reasons I really have gotten back into photography and have made a real push into lighting this winter.

Yup! I love lighting but one thing I realized some time ago was that it's really about problem solving. We're constantly dealing with different scenarios that are usually less than perfect and when those situations present themselves we have to be able to get the job done and can't make excuses or take crappy shots and then tell the client they suck because we only had a tiny room to shoot.

It's both challenging and fun.

Rob,
What kind of background? I have the Calumet background that is 8x8 and stretched by 4 arms that fit into a holder that sits on a stand. I can get it within about 18" of a wall and the tension in the rigging pulls most wrinkles out of the muslin.

Nice for this kind of situation and packs up into an easy to carry package.

HI David,

The background wasn't a problem at all and was about a foot from the wall.
