So i've been on hiatus for a bit, building out the new studio and such. But i took this over the weekend.

IMAGE: http://www.symbolphoto.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/hans.jpg

Hasselblad H3DII, 100 2.2 w/13mm close up tube. Ranger RX AS w/Hensel Sunhaze no diffusors. I would have liked to have gotten his teeth and such in focus. But i couldn't see it throught the screen during shoot time. DOF on these things are ridiculous. No DOF changes in post whatsoever. We are talking like a 1" difference between being 100% in focus and out of focus. Had the Ranger down to 1.5.

I kind of like the way the plane of focus gets his eyes and eye brows but throws just about everything else out a little.

That's what's so cool about close ups. even F11 is not that much focus depth.

Great, thanks for help :-) I was also thinking about using back-up UPS, but how long can it take on one charge (w/ 400Ws flash)?

A good question. I dont know. I got the shot before I ran out of juice.

Is possible to use THIS (external link) back-up UPS for powering elinchrom D-Lite-It 4 400Ws? And if it does, for how many flashes?

I didnt see if it said pure sine wave or not.

Nice shot Brendan, I like the focus as is.

I've decided that I can't justify keeping the Quadra and the Ranger kits so I'm selling off my Quadra. With the funds I get I'm going to buy myself a heavy duty boom stand (most likely the Avenger A4050CS) and a second head or Ringflash for my Ranger.

I'll be buying the boom once the Quadra sells but I'll be holding off on the second head / Ringflash for a little while.

Just wondering what people's thoughts are to a Ringflash vs Second head. My train of thought is a long the lines that a Ringflash will be able to add another tool to my kit and also work well as a rim / backlight when needed?

Also, I've read about adapting the Acute B ringflash to Ranger packs allowing the wider range of accessories and a slightly cheaper RF.

Well, I am so happy to be part of the Elinchrom 'family'!
I had just received my BX Ri 250 To Go kit from B&H, and unfortunately, one unit had loose broken bits of plastic rattling around inside. It worked, but sent it back for a replacement. Managed to get one shot from my reluctant model before doing so.

Look forward to spending a lot of time here!

If you total up the cost of the Acute B ringflash and the mod to fit it to a Ranger RX pack, you'll probably be looking at a cost that's as much as or maybe even more than what the Elinchrom 1500 ringflash costs. If you're not in a hurry, you might be better off waiting for a good sale on the Eli ringflash. I bought mine last September from Amazon for less than $900 brand new.

I like it! By the way, I had the same exact issue with one of my BX Ri 500's and sent it back too.

This might be the better way, the RF1500 is $1699 in Aus  and unfortunately I have to pay stupid amounts of tax on anything over $1000 imported.

I'll put up some WTB's locally and sit for a while. I'm sure there must be a few people that really want a RF and then realise it's not for them. I'm just trying to be alittle minimal and get as many tools as I can

Forgive me...
I am just trying to figure out how to embed a photo into a post, rather than attach it.
So, here is my embedded 'test'...the set up to the first shot w/my new Elinchroms.
Hope it displays correctly.

Ultimately, just a one light set up.

Your processing is brilliant Regina (this is in regard to both posts) and suits males perfectly.

Also, I see you're using the 44cm Beauty Dish, I've been tossing up between this and the 70 as the Mola's are a little out of my price range. My main uses will be single subject location portraits and the odd bit of beauty work in my "studio". There's really no other options available in Australia at a decent price range.

Thank you, Luke.
That was the very first time I used a real strobe and a beauty dish.
I look forward to getting better at studio lighting and hope to learn a lot from these from the forums here.

Good luck with your purchase of a beauty dish. Photos, please...when you do :)

Welcome to the forum, Regina. You have some lovely images up on your Flickr stream. I think "Photoshop" must be your middle name.

What I don't understand, though, is how you could trade Long Island for Zion ;) If you miss it, Rob and I would be happy to send you a cooler full of prime, NY-winter black slush.

Luke - i think you'd be better off keeping the Quadra as running two heads with a fixed ratio off a single pack is too much of a compromise. A 2nd head is good of course for redundancy purposes especially if you're getting paid for what you do.
