I really hate thieves.

Today I needed to go to a job site and take some pictures of our work (granite countertops and tile). So I had all my gear with me. Everything listed in my signature and more. Well I went to my office after to take care of some business and while I was in there someone smashed the rear window of my truck and stole everything. My camera bag with all my lenses, second bag with all my flashes, filters and accessories and my tripod.

I am just sickened.

I do have a personal articles policy for most of my camera gear, but unfortunately I forgot to update it when I bought the 7d and the sigma 50. All the rest of my stuff is on it.

I never leave my camera gear in my car. I always grab my pack and take it into the office with me. This time I had lunch in my hands and some samples so my hand were full and I was just going to be an hour.

And thats all it took.

I recently sold my 28-135is to a member here and paypal just cleared so I was going to ship it today. That lens was in a box next to all my other gear, and amazingly that was the only thing that was not stolen. So RWatkins I will ship you your lens tomorrow. Sorry for the delay as I was stuck filling out a lengthy police report today.

Looks like I will be in the market for new (used) gear once the insurance money comes through.

Had that happen with some high end guitars some years back , fortunately my home insurance policy covered full replacement value although it's hard to find some guitars that have that same sound and feel to them .

A long shot but get the word out to some pawn shops , some of it may show .

Sorry to hear of that.....good luck getting it all squared away .

That really sucks...sorry for your loss! You're 2/3 of the way across the country from me, but I'll be watching CL's for any equipment matching that description!!

now the mind bending part of questioning my gear set up and shopping for all new stuff.

I was wondering if I could live with the 60d instead of the 7d, but not sure...any opinions?

every lens I had could be changed.

I am thinking tokina 12-24 f4 instead of the tamron 10-24
I really liked the tamron 28-75 2.8 so I may get another one of those
The sigma 50 1.4 was calibrated but kind of pissing me off so I may hold of on replacing that.
I loved the tamron 90 macro, but wonder if the canon 100 macro usm might be better.
I would not rebuy the 55-250is but really want a longer tele...like the sigma 150-500 os or the 50-500os

this is going to be painful, at least the wife is being cool about it and hopefully the insurance company does not give me a hard time.

Just because the 7D wasn't on your personal articles policy, it might be covered by a homeowners or renters policy. Did you check that out? Sorry to hear about this.

That really sucks. I'm currently living in San Diego, and now I'm scared to leave anything in my car. Hope you get this all sorted out.

...I was just going to be an hour.

And thats all it took.

It takes a lot less than an hour. See the stuff, find something to smash the window with: 1-2 minutes. (And during that time you don't look like a thief.) Smash the window and get the stuff: 30-60 seconds. Run away: less than another minute.

My point being (for the rest of us) that leaving your stuff for just short time reduces the chances that a bad guy will happen to see it, but otherwise isn't much protection. I try VERY hard to never leave stuff visible in the car. Even just tossing a coat over it is a big help. Putting it in the trunk, if you have one (and if no bad guys see you do it) is even better.

Sorry to hear it happened; I hope your insurance comes through. But it still sucks to have to be without your stuff while you wait for the system to take care of you.

Geoff
All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

Jesus, I am so sorry to hear that! I am glad you have insurance, but it sucks everything was stolen. I hope the cops catch the criminal. There seems to be a lot of these recently, I am afraid to bring my stuff around! (even tho I also have personal article insurance... still a real pain and traumatizing!)
